im not too fussed on veg, i use cfl for veg, so would a hps be better than a mh to flower? :-/

Why do people keep asking a 'one or the other' question about MH and HPS?
MH provides the wavelength/spectrum plants need the most while in the vegetative stage of growth and HPS provides the wavelength/spectrum plants need the most while flowering.
So the correct answer is not one or the other, but instead BOTH MH and HPS.
Purchase a digital ballast that will burn both types of bulbs and use MH for veg and HPS for flower.

mh=veg can be used to flower.. some people report prettier product.... buds will be slightly less denser and leafier.... more suited spectrum for foliage growth
hps= flower production.. mainly used in bloom... can be used to veg but plants will be tall, and slightly ganglier... lil bit higher lumens then mh....
its beleaved the best hid for flowering is a mainly hps light with some added m/h spectrum...

If you can choose only one then go for the HPS, which is more suitable for flowering, but does fine in vegging as well... it is flowering in which you will be spending most time anyways.
If you happen to have a magnetic ballast get a CMH which is great for both stages and is probably the best choice when being able to run only one bulb.

i use HPS for veg and my plants do fine on it, havent tried MH so have no comparison but my plants arent growing straggly or anything

I use HPS only due to the fact that the lumen output is much higher. MH is the ideal spectrum for veg but I feel the lumen output benefits growth more than the ideal spectrum.

That is a good point, and in some cases the dollar difference is even less than you mentioned. The only case where what you said would not be feasible for someone is of the additional heat of a 400-watt would cause them to need more equipment, fans, ducting etc. that would then put the entire system beyond their price range.
But, as you said, the price difference can be minimal.

only reason i run HPS for veg is my MH wont fire for some reason in my ballast. my auto is a little "stretchy" but its got good nodes,
i have been thinking of putting a couple 6500k CFL in there for some mixed spectrum. anyways yeah 400w HPS if its for flowering but generally you can get a digital ballast that will fire both and get both bulbs in the package for a couple ectra bucks, may as well just go that route instead of pinching pennies and spending 20$ less for 1/2 the lighting potential

Over the years I have spent on grow sites I have found that many people will not follow links so often times they are worthless.

If your MH won't fire, it's most likely a problem with the bulb, not the ballast. MH bulbs don't depend on the ballast's igniter to fire.a link to the page would have been better bricktop lol

If I was to grow auto's I think I would veg with HPS so that I could get a little extra streach out of them, and hopefully more yield -- but I don't grow autos.
You can see in this pic of my 400w tent I use a couple of 6500k cfl's below the canopy for a blue enhanced spectrum.
