hi im currently vegging two gdp beans planning on scrogging them but i am gonna fim first. should i wait til they get a little taller and develop more nodes? or do it about now? my plan was for in the next couple days because if i do it now there will be at least 16 tops. my box is 18"x18" and im planning on having 10" between the pots and the screen. any suggestions?my worry is if i wait too long the plant will get out of hand and training on the screen will become difficult and cluttered. please any help is appreciated!! thank you :) IMG_8427.jpgIMG_0838.jpgIMG_1292.jpgIMG_3725.jpg

ok 16 tops? can you explain how this works please.. im growing in a tight space id like to do something like that 2... i topped one of my plants after the 3rd set of leaves.. there were 6 nodes below it does that mean i will get 6 tops ?? correct me if im wrong !!

If you top after the third true set of leaves you are correct this enables you to get 6 "tops". But the two highest tops will grow the fastest and will be much taller than the other branches unless you train them all at the same level. the reason I can get 16 tops is because I fimmed instead of topped which means instead of cutting right above a node you go to the very veryy top of the plant and trim the newest growth only above the very highest node. it might be hard to see but a weed plant will branch out where the leaves meet the stem so as long as you cut above that spot you maximize your amount of available nodes. the more nodes you have though the more space there is between the top and bottom branches. keeping them all at the same height is key to producing big top nugs on every branch

im new to this but i wanna do it badly... maybe you dont mind going a little more in depth on the "Training" part ?

true set of leaves? is this where they come out at the same part on the stem just opposite sides,

Topping can really stress out a plant...fyi. I've done it, but I've also found that LST produces less stress, and you can produce the same, if not better results - IMO

If you lst, then end with topping the plant. That is best IMO, LST first then end the main growing tip causing a boost of growth to all new tops.

imo I think fimming is the way to go. I fim all of my babies usually at 12 inches.but those are garuanteed females.I place the screen a few inches above them then for the next 3 weeks I fill out the screen.once screen is full I flip to12&12.but thats just me every one has their own methods.find the best 1that fits you.hope this helped.

Sorry guys for being MIA last week, had a bunch of stuff on my plate but I'm back with more updates! But first I'd like to say thank you to everyone who left comments and suggestions for me I really appreciate all the advice and information, every bit helps! :bigjoint:

So a little background for anyone new... right now the babies are a little over 1 month from seed, they were sown at the beginning of January sometime and took only a couple days to break the soil. From my records i have them sprouting on 1/5. I fimmed both of them a little over a week ago, and at the beginning of this last weekend i LST'd both of them to allow more light to hit the bottom branches. So far they have reacted very nicely to the training and all the tops are very even. They are all receiving perfect light now so I give it a little over a week before i can start to put in the screen.

One thing i have noticed is the growth at the very top has been very slow. After i fimmed all the lower branches began stretching immediately, but the very top shoots haven't begun to sprout yet. I'm not worried because there are 14 tops on each without the fim area but i would still like to see more growth there. Is this common with fim to have such slow growth at the highest nodes?

Also as you can tell from the pictures the growth is getting kind of crowded with the big sun leaves. When is the earliest i can start to trim these leaves? I know eventually all of them will be gone because they will all be shaded. So far i've just been tucking leaves and moving things around to allow light in and all the tops are growing fine but im mostly worried about airflow against the walls since the leaves are touching them. I've thought about maybe just cutting the leaf fingers in half like when you clone, any thoughts on this? Thank you for your feedback!!

Training starts with bending the plant over, so the top is sideways, to allow more light to hit the bottom branches. This is usually done with a sting or something that you can wrap around the plant and pull the stem over. After this you also have to train the individual branches because you will get a new dominant branch that will stretch higher than all the others, so as they stretch above the plant an inch or so, tie it down and bend it so that it is at the same height or a little lower than all the other branches. Rinse and repeat as necessary and that's what people mean by Low-Stress Training (LST).

Also by true leaves, it's because when growing from seed your plant will have seed leaves, cotyledon leaves, that are inside the shell of the seed before any actual leaves grow. So the first true leaves grow after those leaves.

I would say go ahead and start trimming the fans with undergrowth at 1/2" or longer, as long as you give it a week to recoupe before flowering, it will fill in again but with better leaves that are begging to grow, and the topping really stops the top from growing at least a couple of days, Idont do topping anymore just for that reason, also the fact the I love the top cola when its not topped it gets chubby, and I've been keeping a eye on your grow im really watching this thing because I would love to have some femmed GDP seeds, I been checking the tude everyday for them. Also since your fimmed/topped I would tie it down some.

Fashooo mang thanks a lot for taking the time to answer my questions! Yea I've already cut the lowest fan leaves since they weren't receiving any light at all, and I'm just waiting as you said for some growth to cover the leaves before i cut them :) Right now though most of the leaves are receiving good light it's just that they are really stacked on each other from tucking and moving them around and what not. My biggest concern at the moment is ventilation in those overgrown areas. What do you think about cutting the biggest fan leaves in half like when you clone?

That will also work mane, to get the leaves off of the wall.

Sounds good, yea I ended up trimming the leaves touching the walls in half because i had to cut some anyways due to them getting burned against my side light "/.
And i did LST them too! All the tops are growing up reaaal nicely so hopefully i can start to train on the screen in a week :)

And ohhhh yea I actually was thinking about doing that technique sometime too just to experiment... without the secondary toppings though. I did something similar by topping for 4 tops but didn't LST nearly as much... It ended up lookin like this

i wish i woulda kept the tops more even buut it still yielded nice and showed me how much growth i could fit in my box :)

You definitely try that though it's perfect pulling all 4 branches to the sides of the pot, it ends up filling out real nice :bigjoint:
