Venus fly trap starting to flower, any growers of this? need advice!

Well it was bought a month or two ago while I was picking up stuff for other plants. It's been sitting on the window sill and ignored mostly, but I noticed this long shoot coming out of it and told my mum it's probably flowering and looked it up to confirm. Apparently flowering is pretty much a death sentence for the plant itself unless looked after well. What should I do? I was thinking perhaps take a clone just in case (possible in flowering?) and then just let it do it's thing and self pollinate it. I'd gladly plant the seeds but it takes forever for them to grow apparently. Thoughts on what I do/buy? Just in the soil it came in atm. I have compost and a high P/K fertilizer will that help?

It will grow much faster if you pinch off the flower buds as they appear. Instead of cloning.

You only need to feed them a few insects per year and the insects can be live or freshly killed. In the case of a dead insect, the trap might not close all the way, but you can help it along by squeezing the sides of the trap a bit. If you keep your plant outdoors, it will probably catch enough insects on its own to survive.

Ok, first off, DON'T FEED IT!!!!!! Also, don't transplant it until you do some more research. Venus flytraps like planting mediums with little to NO nutrient charge. They have evolved to grow in bogs and swamps which have unique soil structures and very little nutrients, which is why they catch bugs. I had one that flowered and lived for another 2 years. lol!

Pretty flowers for such an evil plant I think. And ok no nutes or compost. Just outdoor soil? Stones? I know they like sphagum moss or whatever but I have none of that

No outdoor soil. Try googling it, but if memory serves me, I think I used a mixture of sand and sphagnum. Do you have a Wal-Mart or Home Depot type big box store? Try one of those places for sphagnum.

yeah ive never seen them flower either. i suppose theyre always in stores under constant lighting.

im starting to believe its in its "dormant" phase that ive read about, where everything dies anyway. which is weird... heres a pic

I think I heard somewhere that they go dormant after flowering, but come back again after a while. I'll bet you could easily find out more with a little online research.
I had one live for at least four years. I remember it flowering several times. I never gave it fertilizer but did feed it flies occasionally. It finally died when the pot got knocked over.

plant was struggling to flower with uk winter light so i put it under a couple cfl's. its now showing its white petals but is still closed, a day or two and the petals should come out!

Cool. I have pitcher plants. They grow wild here.
Sounds like a good plant for a co-op grow - it would take care of any indoor bugs

a fly trap only needs like two flies a year man. and you shouldn't touch them.

hey there! my fly trap had 3 long stalks with flowers bout 1 week ago, ive ha this fly trap for nearly 3 years! only had 1 transplant, they love moss, and real shitty soil, i got a few pics of her guarding my small tree! and looks like she had a meal not long ago, i see bugs in the traps on a regular basis, i dont feed it, got past that fun stage!, she catches plenty of bugs, even ones that may end up in my outdoor pride girl i drench my fly trap all the time, and leave it in a dish of water, every month i flush tap water through it for about 10 minutes, clears all the dead crap away, makes for new green growth

btw, i checked and in just a day they went from being closed but nearly opening, to one petal being fully open! the power of cfls on fly traps

Indeed. DO NOT! Plant it in any fertilizer or high nutrient based soil. They are use low nutrient based soil and thats why they have adapted to eat insects to supply them with their nutrient's like protein etc. I own a baby myself :3

I just picked up a baby flytrap at Lowes. When I saw it, I had to buy it. I think its the coolest plant Ive ever seen. It has 4 heads on it. Ive got it in the veg room under a t5. I would like to transplant it into a bigger pot. Ive read that transplanting can really shock them. Can anyone tell me how to do this safely? Any other tips for the care of a flytrap beside the generic info Im finding online would be cool too! Thanks!

My neighbors grow these things like crazy and sell them. I've asked to come in and see them, but they won't let me in. They grow medical MJ, and think I don't know, and I grow, and they don't know. It's fucking silly.

Thats a shame. What's the deal with legal patients not telling a neighbour then? Is it just plain ol privacy?
