LED Light Panels

Does anyone have experiencing using LED light panels to grow? I ran across a few sites that advertise these types of light systems, and claim they work fine. I doubt they compare to HPS systems, but, for a small grow, lets say, 2-3 plants, in a very small enclosure, with LED light panels above, and around the plants, I'm apt to think it might be worth a shot. The power consumption is super low, the heat generated is almost negligable, and the fire hazard is pretty much gone. Plus they have an extremely long lifetime and low maintenence.

Supposedly the leaves will turn black because of the spectrums they use, but the resellers claim that doesn't matter and the plants will continue to grow fine.

They also claim these system where developed by NASA for growing plants in space, which, if true, makes logical sense. I see no reason why a panel full of different color LED lights can't deliver at least the key spectrum colors to the plants, and LED lights are very bright, so all in all, I can't come up with a reason why they wouldn't work, but I would like some real life takes.

Here's some links for those who want to research:
LED Grow Lights (LED Bars) for Plants, Power Our L.E.D. Cube Hydroponics Grow Box

LED-PlantBar -- LED Light Bars for Indoor Gardening by LEDtronics

What are your thoughts?

Hey Doc. I'm not an expert by any means, but I have done tons and ton of research on these puppies. With a small experience in them with growing herb garden things, those cheap kits from the store, yknow? It worked well on those! lol

I think the technology is sweet, but it's not ready yet. And sadly, I thought I would be the last to admit it, but its true. You can research till you are blue in the face, but the only thing to know for sure is to try it. However, unless you are simply hemorrhaging money, go for shit, otherwise, I suggest, invest wisely.

There are tons of threads and sites with tons of info about experiences. Find a LED VS. HPS comparison. Just google it. There are videos and all.

On a side note, those square panels, the one I have, you get about a cubic foot of light coverage. One foot square, and one foot tall. That is leaving about 3-6" from the tops.

Peace, and good luck!

while led's provide perfectspectrum for plants they dont have the brightness to form dense nugs i say go with some t 5's if space and heat are of concern

Ah! I didn't think of that, but your right, T5! I have never used them, but the research I have done seems sweet! Def. worth any money spent. Get HO though, not just T5!

Peace!

We tried them and now they are sitting on a shelf collecting dust. We used htem to veg and it just kept them alive, they were not really growing like the ones under the t-8s.
