It's a good idea only if it results in real consolidation and budget reduction, which, with Obama, I every much doubt. Just like the payroll tax cut was a cynical attempt to portray Obama as a tax cutter, this is a cynical attempt to portray him as a government-reducer.

No, the payroll tax cut was an attempt to increase aggregate demand and create jobs. It did do that, although not nearly at a large enough scale. I mean, didn't you spend that extra $20 a week? I know I did. It's good economic policy, stop looking for reasons to hate the man.

It was borrowing money from China to try to bribe voters with a few dollars. It was literally taking money from social security that had to be made up with deficit spending. Cutting taxes without cutting spending is sleight of hand. If Obama is a real tax cutter, let's see him leave the Bush Tax Cuts in place.

Really? So Obama is only a "real tax cutter" if he preserves supply side cuts that do nothing good for the economy, meanwhile he is a just a faker politician for cutting a tax THAT ACTUALLY HAS AN EFFECT on aggregate demand? Mhmm, keep telling yourself that broskii.
and to be clear, I have nothing against tax cuts if they have an actual purpose. The Bush tax cuts largely ended up in savings and personal investment accounts, and have a multiplier effect sub 50 cents on the dollar... The payroll tax cut, although small, is MUCH more effective in terms of generating economic activity, demand, and therefore jobs on a dollar to dollar basis.
