Also, they make bulbs specially designed for use in digital ballasts...But I run all magnetic ballasts, so I don't know much about those.

you can buy 2 seperate bulbs with different spectrums; one for veg and one for flower. although most bulbs now have a bit of both. basically these bulb produce the sort of light that is found during spring or summer. if u can afford it buy both. if not use 'dual spectrum' bulbs. if u want the complicated answer just ask.

My Lumatek 600W ballast is made for HPS. I am using it now with a 600 watt Ushio MH conversion bulb. Is your Lumatek a MH or HPS or switchable? cn

Whatever you do, don't use LED for veg. they are terrible and growth is very slow. Good for flowering though

What is the best spectrum to use for each stage???
To learn more than you probably want to know about that, allow me to direct you to the "LED without LEDs" thread, which actually isn't about LED at all but using aquarium T5 fluorescents to tailor the output spectra to the plant's actual demand spectrum. cn

Then you can use any 400-watt bulb. Folks here will have their passionate opinions about brand, and I'll spare you mine. Nothing wrong with starting cheap. However Lumatek does make "digital" MH and HPS bulbs ... the electrodes are designed for the different way digital ballasts present the power to the bulb v. magnetic ballasts. cn
