Fucking Words....

I'm not trying to sound like an asshole, but sometimes I get frustrated with people who don't communicate to that level. I'm in the "healing arts" as a previous poster called it, but I work with dead people, tissue, blood, piss and shit, so never really had to learn to tone it down. I've never had the "huh, what?" stare come at me from a cup of dookie, and the person it came from, it's not my job to talk to them, that's their doctor's job. I have a PhD in biochemistry and am just accustomed to communicating a certain way. It's certainly not my intention to make someone feel dumb or intimidate someone into conceding an argument with my vocabulary (and I rarely get into arguments anyway), it's just the way I talk. Anyway, it's a forum, you're going to have people from all walks and backgrounds. Everyone here is going to have to meet in the middle somewhere. A lot of times I have to google street terms I read here because I have no idea, even in context. That's a good thing I think, though. I learn things on here all the time, that's why I keep coming back.

Myself, blatant misspelling drives me nuts. At the top of my list is "loose." Loose means not tight, lose means misplace. I'll work on my dillwad vocabulary if y'all promise to try and work on that :bigjoint:
...don't ever lose a loose stool ;)

I wonder if any of this is aimed at me.
I have an established predilec<cough!> I tend to use big words.
I have a particular sense of what is beautiful in the use of langage. I like to use the word that most nearly matches what i am trying to say, and often that means a long or esoteric or specialized term. With dictionary.com so instantly available, i dismiss any claim that i am making people "work" as simple laziness.

I never purposefully choose a big word where a small one will do. It's *never* about "looking smart". But very often, when the big word simply does the job better, i don't feel a need or obligation to avoid it. cn

...sounds a bit like the quote in Ty's response to Heis' "grow as a person" thread. Don't be ashamed if you can "x" even though some other people cannot "x".

I think that is also written on the walls of softcore porn sets. :)

Heya Heph,
No one's purposefully trying to deceive or confuse anyone, but when studying and discussing things like philosophy certain words and sayings get inculcated into your vocabulary. If anything, keep looking the words up, and before you know it you'll be using them too! ^.^

P.S. I hope you looked up the word "Inculcated".... great word. lol
Do you see how basic my posts are? There very basic. I can use more complicated words but I choose not to in order to communicate better.

Believe me though, I love complicated words. I'm just referring to the people that can say something in a much shorter post, yet fuck around and add so many extra words. It's like WTF....

I also understand that sometimes you must use certain words, but I believe we should try to avoid unnecessary words.

I'm gonna go look that word up now, :).

didnt they ever teach you context clues in school?
Yeah they did. But when you're on a forum with chill people, I find no reason to post with unnecessary vocabulary. I never said that I couldn't understand these words, nor did I say I can't use these words. All I'm saying is we should save the advanced vocabulary for research papers.

If you looked at a paper, or letter that each of us had written by hand, the vocabulary used would vary as much as the style of handwriting itself.

Look at the sentence I just wrote for example; I used the word 'vocabulary' instead of using the word, 'words'. To me, vocabulary is a more accurate depiction of the idea I'm trying to convey, for other people it may well be another word entirely.

On the flip side;

For some people, it's easy to talk or write a lot, without actually saying anything. :D

I get the point that we are all trying to communicate in the most efficient manner on this forum. Like BB and Neer stated, it's sometimes a 'big' word that is most appropriate for the idea being expressed. We shouldn't be trying to dumb down our language for the lowest common denominator, we should all be attempting to improve our vocabulary, among other skills. Language is primarily the tool for thought, not communication. I feel that is its secondary purpose. The more developed your vocabulary, the clearer your thought process, imho. I love raising my game and and constantly improving myself (one of the reasons I love this forum, lots of intellectual fuckers here and I've already learned so much from them), and it's just SO damn easy in this information age. People shouldn't have to feel uncomfortable for their learned skills just because others may not currently share them Let your light shine bright, people! There is too much catering to the lowest common denominator in this country, so keep an open tab set on dictionary.com, Hep, and step up yo game :)

I agree with you about not being able to tell when someone is joking or.not over.the.web.

We all cool anyways.man, im enjoying my medicine and am in an awesome mood

...'sup Oly? :)

I use the 'I'm not trying to sound like an asshole' bit sometimes but it is done in respect to people. Also, sarcasm and things of that nature do not translate well online. Of course, on the flipside, it's like a disclaimer that says "well, normally I AM a dck, but here I am not being one"

I would compare the high to a super bog and the taste to a skunk strain..

If words being used in an attempt to hinder your understanding of a debate or conversation bothers you, or confuses you, then Deepak Chopra would outright make you want to break his legs.

At home I virtually always vape with my Silver Surfer through a Syn mini showerhead perc, stemless ice bong. I love a good J but usually use a pipe on the road. I play a lot of poker and about half the players I know smoke so it makes for interesting games sometimes. I like the Raw's that come with the pre-cut lefties so you can burn all of the way down and not have to save a roach. Plus I like the big ass cones you can make with them.
