questions about pot sizes, any ways to use smaller pots beacause of limited space

I know the general rule of thumb is 1 gallon per foot of plant, but im very limited for space. Can i get away with a smaller size like maybe 3 gallon? if i keep the plants shorter or something? i dont want to end up flowering and getting the roots cramped up.

Yeh you can get away with 3 gallon pots, but a lot depends on your grow system, plant strain, how much you're feeding etc..

What size lights are ya using? You probably don't want to end up with big plants anyways, unless ya have a big system. I've used 3 gallon pots, flowered the plants at around 14", and ended up with plants less than 30" tall. Those pots were plenty big enough, not even close to being rootbound.

Find square pots to maximizespace efficiently. Round taperd pots leave tons of space around them that could be filled with soil. I have plenty of room and still flower in 7 gallon milk crates using a black garbage bag as a liner. If nothing else, it's easy to build your own square crates, any size you like, out of lumber

i know your name but being a pot head, i'm a bit fuzzy. if you're the smokinrav from years ago and other places, i recall you were into something but can't remember what... was it stressing plants or tying them down or bubbling buckets or... :joint:

from your picture i think i have a clue!

You could try grow bags. Eliminates wasted space. I've grown in 3's and 5's with no prob. I also grew in two quart pots for my led grow with no problem. But there was no heat either so but I wouldn't do that in a reg setup.

I want to be known as the one who brought LST supercropping to the masses at Overgrow and ICmag (not the one who created it tho, that was Delta at Hempcultivation)

What you do know me for is the Overgrow growFAQ on supercropping, the one brought to us by NYPD in a 1999 High Times article. That's the one where you snap the hurd. I despise being known for that FAQ, do not use that method (havent since 2002, shortly after I wrote it) and patiently ask any website that has it to remove it so I can replace it with a LST article. So far,no one has taken me up on it. :sigh:

Here is the ICMAG thread I wrote in 2004.

I submitted this to the Overgrow FAQ people, but the site went down before it could replace the High Stress Training article. And now I live with that damn thing associated with my name forever.

Back on topic, I also have a submission on square containers in the OG FAQ

damn internet!!!! lol

snapping the hurd! that's the one! also the hst! :)

I did the hurd thing for a few grows. it led to some interesting "rake" like branch formations. i have no clue if it actually increased weight though. i've been posting since 95 or so and i've tried everything you can do in soil at least once!

nice to see old timers still around. i followed shabang from laughing moon to overgrow. i was fatboy at OG. at the time it referred to huge joints. now, it means something else! :(

:joint: the good old days!

just start your plants on 12/12 light schedule from seed. Then they wont grow into monsters and a 3gal pot will be plenty of space for them.

I remeber reading in the past that there is a paint that you coat the inside of your pots with and when the roots make contact they turn around and keep growing so that you were able to use smaller pots without rootbound problems... I remember that it sounded feasable at the time and that it had magnesium or some sort of metal in the paint. I'll do a little searching and see if I can find anything on this...

Here's a pick of my plants in 3 gallon square mesh pots. I set the mesh pots in square pans from the local garden store and even though this is my first grow that made it to flower, I think it's doing really well. My tallest plant is just over 7 feet tall and luckily quit growing just under the LED panel that I mounted against the ceiling of my grow booth. That's in a 3 gallon Mesh pot, and the other plants are all putting some really nice buds out in their mesh pots too. Check it out.
