IR is Infra-red heat, not really hazardous to health, I think you're referring to Ultraviolet radiation which is the kind of light you find in 'tanning salons'.

I just object vehemently to seeing people recommend HPS systems to newbie growers whether or not that system is right for their circumstances or not, purely because it's based on nothing more that dogma from the people who constantly and consistently recommend it.

There's nothing at all narrow minded about what I'm saying or trying to do, you're the narrow minded ones for persistently recommending HPS systems regardless of their suitability.

I'm confident that what I've written on this subject has made a few people rethink their lighting setups and hopefully by them doing that they'll get better results at lower costs.

That's what it's about for me - pushing the boundaries of our knowledge and utilising that knowledge to help us grow more efficiently and effectively.

Newbie growers can handle HID. It is the piranahs of misinformation who are preaching CFL's.

What is recommended is HID lighting and not specifically just HPS. I recommend a switchable ballast which allows a grower to simply change the bulb and flip a switch on the ballast. That is too fucking easy versus what is the color spectrum of your CFL bulbs? All that is horse shit.

You buy Hortilux or SunMaster or Agrosun HID bulbs and go with it.

So i have been using a single cfl for veg now for 3 days, and i have to say that the growth and the node spacing is really good I would even go as far to say that it is an improvement over the metal halide i was using to veg with before, I will still be using hps's to flower with though

I have seen used and new HID systems CHEAP. You have not looked hard enough. That is the classic excuse plus I save electricity excuse to sell shitty sytems better served by HID lights.

Money is not an excuse. I had an extra 400watt Metal hallide setup I just gave free to a buddy who was getting started. If you need a set-up...barter. That is too fucking easy so when I hear excuses of money, I say you are not trying hard enough.

a 250w cfl is vegin my plants better than my 400w mh was doing and i have seen it with my own eyes so i dont need to argue with you over it as i will trust my own judgement just as you will trust yours but then have you ever veg'd with a 250w 6400k cfl and a 400w mh and noticed the difference on the same strains?

I have a suspicion HID lights are tested in reflective hoods which would mean more directed light while CFL's are tested open-air 360* exposure.

yes the HID lights are tested under a reflective hood, because thats what they are used with.....

makes sense to test it how its used.

While this might not seem significant someone rig something up to run their HPS outside of its unit and test its lumens. Maybe its projection is the key

Would a CFL under a reflective hood produce more lumens. (thats an easier one to test)

Of course HID lights are in hoods with directed light or did that just dawn on you or some shit?

Did you think it was like floros and a fucking bulb dangling or virtually non directed light ?

And when you add MYLAR to the floors and walls that same intensely directed light gets bounced back up to the leaves and guess what? More and better bud but stick with CFL's and bugglegum and the snakeoil salesman selling the latest and greatest in CFL growing....hhahahahhahahhaa....
