I say don't let your kid be a little ass hole. You gotta spank them or they won't know what's up. I've been helping raise my little brothers since 5th grade (my mom picks assholes, and my dad and their dad wasn't around. Different dad's same mom) and I spank them daily. Nothing wounding or painful. Just enough to completely get them to stop thinking about, doing, or saying whatever it was they were a second ago. Sometimes they cry, but we even talk about it and they understand that they lie, and other stuff, and I just want them to be good big people. And they can't be good big people if they're little ass holes.

I see spanking as something that only needs to be done when its warranted. If a child minds and doesn't need a swat to the ass, then they dont need it, but if a kid is a pain in the ass, screams, whines, etc all the damn time, then its time to reign that kid in and demand the respect you "good parents" deserve. We work our asses off so they can have a good life, but they will treat you like shit unless you do something about it. Timeouts and shit only gets you so far. I had the fear of a wooden spoon growing up, that shit hurt, and worked well on me...after a few times all it took was the threat and I smartened up

I'm indifferent about spanking.

I don't think a child under 1 should be spanked and I don't think a child over 10 should be spanked. Also, parents/caregivers should be cautious on the severity of their spanking because it can easily get out of hand.

I think spanking is a win/lose type of deal, but when children don't listen for shit and they aren't learning, what the hell do you do?

I raised three boys. I spanked them. I agree with Morgan's guidelines on age but I might move the limits to 2 - 13 yrs old.

There is a difference between spanking and beating. A spank, a hard slap on the ass, or two is like a sharp angry word. It can cut through the bullshit and clear the air quickly saving both the parent and the child from a long drawn out struggle. It should never be used to express anger.

Beating is a full scale and sustained physical assault. I was beaten by my father with a belt. Looking back I can understand his frustration ( I had just burned down the local synagogue ) but I don't think it worked.

I too once beat one of my sons. Whether justified or not, I don't think that worked either and I deeply regret it to this day.


Being a parent is an impossible job. There isn't anything more important and no one has the damn manual. All parents, if they care, feel this anguish. Was I too strict or too lax? Too hard or too soft?? I still agonize over this and my kids are in their 30s. All you can do is the best you know how.

I dont think it works at all.My mom and aunt used to beat the hell out of us and we were respectful to them but nobody else.We were horrible kids lol.

spanking is one of those things that doesn't work the same with every kid or every parent. a lot of parents don't get how it works and think they are supposed to smack the kid every time he does something. if done too much it just becomes background noise and is ineffective. i think the biggest issue is empty threats. kids pick up on an empty threat maker immediately and get real defiant and start checking all the limits. then finally the parent gets so pissed at the ballsy kid they start screaming and whack them one. that process is extremely flawed. my mother controlled me with scary faces and following through with threats. if she said she was going to get the mini blind wand, she GOT that shit. at a certain point, the scary face was enough.
