Depends on how far back you're asking. Marijuana wasn't illegal until 1937 and electric lighting has been around longer than that.

Well, I'm more referring to how did people do it before being able to go out and buy a 1000W HPS to hang in their room.

I've heard older guys talking about setting up dozens of 4' T8's back in the 80's...it just seems so...impractical.

My mind was back in the 70's growing. I think in the 80's HID's were being used. Could be wrong tho...

When in the 70's did T12's come along? I'd love to just have a greenhouse really, but you know...the times and all.

T-12's were in common usage in the 30's, the t8's came along in '81, and now the new thing is t5's.

Indoor didn't start untill the late 70's and early 80's, thy first were done with the a bunch of big T'12's and some people used street lights they were the first HID's people used
