Homemade Under Current

I was curious as to how you regulate your PPM in an undercurrent system. Since you have water coursing throughout the whole system, it doesn't seem like you can close off the reservoir and adjust PPM until you're at the right setting, then open the flood gates (so to speak,) letting the properly PPM'd water into the system. Perhaps you can explain?

Thanks in advance!

Take a look at the pictures for reference. Basically, the two white pipes in the cooler are the flow, and the black pipe in the center of the reservoir is the return, which shoots at an angle across the cooler to the surface. For emptying, I slide a hose on that same black pipe. To top-up I simply screw a cap into each of the white pipes, and open the flow control all the way. My reservoir is tall, so it holds all the pump can pull out of the system before losing suction, which is when I close the flow control, and kill the pump. Anything below my full line is topped up with deionised water, PPM tested, then nutrient, then a last PPM test. Once I'm satisfied with the readings, I just remove the caps, open the flow control, and turn on the pump. Gravity feeds it all back into the system. I also had a top feed on this system, but wanted to see how they did without it for a while, it's back on now. Overall I like it. Coolest part, everything to build it can be found @ the hardware or pet store.
I hope that helps. If not post back and I'll explain.

Super informative. Pretty much explains it. I was confused on the matter when looking at larger undercurrent systems that don't seem to have reservoirs capable of holding all of the system's water. Still not sure how that would work for them. Perhaps they slowly raise the PPM's, and check back after a few minutes, potentially raising again, until they're at the desired level. I suppose I could always call the guys that design the commercial systems and just ask, ha.

Thanks, Hob!

Bro that setup is amazing! You need to post the blueprints for real. I'm def going to try and make a replica on my next grow. It looks like I have the exact same tent that you have. Basically your setup would work perfectly for everything that I need/want to do. I'll def be following your grow and I wish you the best of luck!

Here is a good video for understanding how the actual Under Current works. From what I understand they adjust PPM's exactly like you said, a little at a time. My system is exactly like this, just a cooler instead of a bucket. Youtube is full of videos on the subject, hopefully this one will help.

Ha, I know the site that's from. I've spent a lot of time looking at their systems. I'm considering stepping up to a larger medical grow here in the near future. Still debating the type of tech I'd like to use.
I personally chose this design for several reasons, easy access, ability to rotate plants, ability to control flow, water temp control, etc...Not in any way saying it's the best, just that it works for me. Pointer, if you decide to go this direction, stay with the shorter pots, but use larger pipe. On mine, in the beginning, the system worked fine with the flow control wide open, but as soon as the roots started to fill the pots it forced me to about half way. (roots will be sucked into pipes, clog up) The rubber grommet I used for the pipes is from a sink drain, available @ any hardware store.
This is my first run in this system, mostly a soil grower really, but every now and then I try hydro again, content on failure. This system, and it's ease of use, allowed me to finally figure it out. More water is sooo much easier to manage. Now any system can use a butt load of water, just up to you to find which is for you. Good luck on your search!

Due to a lack of interest in this grow, this will be my last post. Thanks.
Aww, no way! I love this grow! You have to keep updating. Peeps will start to roll more frequently when you're deep in flower. Plus, you're one of the only people writing about an undercurrent system. This is great stuff!

Yeah, I appreciate you guys. I'll post back with pics before long, just won't be every day. Plants are fine, backed off on the PPM's a bit, 1300, that's all they want right now. Topped the 2 larger ones, all 3 are about the same height now. Tomorrow is res change. BTW mr2shim, My R/O deionising filter cost $60.00, free shipping, it's portable, and would be a good alternative to buying 3 gallons a day. Here is a pic of mine, PM me and I'll send you the link if you want.

Nice, I just replied to you in my thread. I'll pm you to get that link in a minute. Def want to pick one up because I'm going to prolly grow another right after this one. Been thinking about growing Nirvana Ice, but I may get something else.

And yea, don't update every day like 8 times a day, you won't get that much interest because nothing really has changed. 3-5 day updates are best. I should follow that advice because I post everyday.

Where do you order your seeds? I've looked online, and decided I want a mix, indica for a shorter plant, but with that energetic sativa high. Hard to find the right one with 1000 strains, and I hate sitting on a couch, ya know? Nirvana Ice, beautiful plant. Never seen white like that on cannabis, crazy.

I've ordered from attitude(I think they charge WAY too much for shipping) and herbies head shop(I like better than attitude) I'm going to be ordering future seeds from herbies because I like their shipping prices and how long it took to get to me (less than 10 days total)

Also like how herbies has a pick n mix website solely for pick n mix.

so you have

www.herbiesheadshop.com
and
www.herbiespicknmixseeds.com

which worked great for me because 6 strawberry diesel seeds was like 100 bucks! Only needed one and attitude is sold out of Holy Smoke Straw Diesel.

Nice set-up, can't wait to see it running. Is this a work in progress? Plenty of notes on my end, so just ask. BTW, I'm using Heisenbergs rendition of tea also, only been 2 weeks, so it's hard to tell, but no issues. Anyway, let me know when you get the journal up. Good luck!

If you're looking for a nice hybrid, I would def take a look at DNA's Cannadential and/or ReCon. I've tried, and loved, both of them. My buddy who's growing the Cannadential right now had no problems getting his from The Attitude, which is where I've been getting most of my seeds from, too.
