BS, a 400 watt is far less intense than sunlight, in the wild seedling wil sprout in full sunlight.
LOL, where you diging up these "facts"
I've sprouted in full summer sun with no "harm" in fact they thrived like no other grow under lights.

a few days ago i burned two seedlings to death in sunlight and unaltered potting soil. they turned yellow, shriveled up and died. it wasn't lack of water; the UV here was too much for them.
socks, if you're using a high-wattage light i'd let it get some actual leaves first. at least the two cotelydons. but i have almost zero experience

I would wait until you see the first two leaves sprout then put as much light on it as you want.

I put all my seedlings under 400 W HPS LESS than 2 feet away and if you have alright circulation it's fine. For this grow and my last grow.
My plants are as tall as I am now at Day 17 since the 12/12 switch. I do 24/0 light for vegging.

you have to sprout them in sunlight not move them outside after a weeek or so indoors under a skimpy light. or harden them off gradually.
In real life MJ starts in full sunlight with no problem.

Using the inverse square law of I = 1/d^2 which is Intensity = Light Output/Distance^2. A 400 w HID has 32,000 lumens. The end result is 8,000 at 2 feet away. Not only is the actual light output too high for seedlings, the heat given off could fry your plants.

just use a couple of 100w cfls. That will do the trick for the first couple weeks. Then add more cfls or invest in mh. btw cfls are fine for vegetation .
Fair point, but it burnt the shit out of my first attempt so I learnt from it and used floros. I'm not here to fill anyone full of BS, just passing on information I've picked up from personal experiences in the hope that someone else finds it usefull.

basic science- plants use light to photosynthesize. they need leaves to collect light. if they don't have leaves they can't collect light. so you might as well wait til the first leaves show to put a light over it. feel free to disagree with me for any number of reasons.
you might have to pop the seed coat off her top if it's stuck, but gently.
once again i want to say i have basically zero experience with actually growing to harvest, but back east all our bud was seedy, so i've germinated lots of seeds over the years just for fun. give it a couple days on its own before you do anything
