Hi, in short.. I have 2x 10L DWC Res pots, and the Res. has reached a whopping 26+oC (Not Cool!!)

I have added heaters for cold spells in winter... But really need a 'fix' for Summer, ideally I want the Res. to be approx 18oC, Please help me achieve this with Pics, Links, and general helpful info.

I know its possible if I spend a few hundred quid.. However being the wrong side of Harvest I am pretty skint, and would appreciate a quick easy solution..

I am sure there are lots of RIU members that are either in the same boat, or that could do with the same question answered!

So far I have resorted to using Blue Ice Packs.. But if anyone has better ideas/solutions, That would really really help me out, cheers - STELTHY :leaf:

What are you using for reservoirs? If they aren't insulated putting some on will help you a lot. I use pipe insulation and it works wonders. I have some 5 gal buckets outside where it's in the low to mid 30s and the water has been staying under 23°C.
Are you running CO2? If you're not cooling your grow more will be good for the plants and will cool your res.

My reservoirs are 2x 10L plastic storage tubs (pet food etc..) I have spray painted them black to stop light getting to the roots, but dont have any insulation around them yet.. Will insulation be good for both Summer and Winter ?? I am not running Co2 as my setup won't allow it until I can get some elctronic air tight dampers..

I'll look into Insulating them, cheers mate + REP! - STELTHY :leaf:

Insulating them will help year round. In the summer it blocks heat and in the winter it keeps it in, literally an insulator is something that doesn't conduct heat well.
Go to the plumbing section of whatever the British equivalent of Home Depot is and they will have reflective insulation (basically mylar coated fiberglass) for ducting and pipes. The duct one is wider and the pipe one is thinner. I use the pipe one because the one for ducting was wider than I needed for my buckets so I was going to waste some. It cost like $4 to wrap two buckets.

I had another idea.. dunno how successful it would be but: What if I was to put my DWC air-pump into a mini fridge, and modify it by drilling holes for the 2 air-tubes and power cable, and a few tiny holes for air-flow.. I wonder if this would also help me cool my DWC Res. tubs ? - STELTHY :leaf:

Do the proper chillers make much noise whilst they are working ? And can I chill 2 separate 10l res tubs with with one chiller? Cos they are kinda expensive - STELTHY :leaf:

If you want to you could do it a different way though it won't make a huge difference but if you make a DIY a/c using a fan, and such you could rig it up right as to where the DIY ac tube is behind the fan so the fan is sucking the cooled air from the tubing and on the other side have a copper water line there and the cold air should help drop the temps. Youtube DIY a/c.

Also if you go to a small grow shop and you go there alot the guy might give you a deal on a A/C. The guy at the hydro shop where I live gave me a $36 discount on my 6 inch cooltube since I have bought a few things from there before.

It depends on the amount of water that you have to cool but you should ask your local hydro store and they can give you more advice on what is needed.

I have 2x 10L Res. so.... 20L all in all, and the temp needs to be bought down from 26oC to approx 18oC, so a drop of 8oC is needed, I went to my local Hydro store and he had 1 cooler in but didn't know to much about them :( I suppose I could call an aquarium shop etc and ask them about noise levels etc...


One other thing I was wondering, do the water chillers have filters in them, would this effect the nuit solution?.... I suppose if the chillers have filters the best thing to do would be to remove them... Maybe?? - STELTHY :leaf:

I wonder if anyone could tell me what's the smallest aquarium/hydroponic water chiller that's available & where from ? I only have 20 L of water in total that needs cooling, 10 L per Res. tub.. so ideally a very small water chiller would be perfect.. REP! For the best answers :) - STELTHY :leaf:
