Hello All

I 've been off the forum for several months as life just got in the way. So while I have not been an active member, I have been a busy worker.

My last endeavor in this room can be found here... https://www.rollitup.org/grow-journals/394958-dual-tent-grow-2-x.html This was a 2 x 600 watt tent grow. I have now packed up the tents and gone back to using the entire room to grow. The tents work - but they are hard to work with. The only new equipment purchased were two LumenAire hoods for $80 each. I spent alot of time cleaning old trays, fans, pumps, reservoirs, hoses, and pots.

I erected a wall to create a new room that is approximately 7.5 x 12.75 feet. The general equipment specs are as follows:

  • 4 x 600 watt Quantum ballast
  • 1 x 1000 watt Quantum ballast
  • 2 x CAP LumeCool hood
  • 2 x CAP LumenAire 6 hood
  • 1 x Adjust-a-Wing L:arge
  • CAP MLC-4X
  • Sentinel CHHC-1
  • 3 x 6" inline fan
  • 1 x 8" inline fan
  • 4 x 12" AirKing wall monut oscillating fan
  • 6" DustShroom HEPA filter
  • 4" DustShroom HEPA filter
  • 5 x Botanicare 2x4 trays
The 4 AC hoods are cooled with a 6" ValuLine fan drawing outside air in through a 4" HEPA filter. Fresh intake air is brought in with a 8" ValuLine fan through a 6" HEPA filter. Air is exhausted through two 6" Vortex fans. The 4 AC lights cover the trays. Additional plants will be placed on the floor under the 1000 watt Wing.

Material has been in the room for 2 weeks, but I will post pics in chronological order. See the next post for pics.

Here are pics I snapped a couple weeks back... the room was close to complete then, but short a few items.

The Green Door. OK, it's not actually green!

Show us what's behind door number one.

5 Botanicare 2 x 4 trays sit under 4 air-cooled 600 watt hoods. Additional plants will be placed on the floor under a 1000 watt Adjust-a-Wing.

The 2 center hoods run MH bulbs while the 1000 watt, and the end 600's run HPS.

Intake air for both the lights and room are HEPA filtered. Thanks, DustShrooms.

Fresh air is pulled in with 8" ValuLine fan. It spills out onto the floor and then I mix it up with oscillating fans.

Two 6 inch inline fans handle exhausting the room. All exhaust fans are mounted in the attic to keep the room clean and cool as possible. The fans are suspended from the rafters to eliminate vibration.

A Sentinel CHHC-1 manages the climate. One of the 6" exhaust fans, and the 8" intake fan are on speed controllers. This allows for a wide range of matching in/out CFM options for various weather conditions. In the Summer months they are all on full. The MLC4X light controller made it easy to run 5 lights at 240v (the outlets accept both 110/220).

I will follow up this post with pics of the plant material and the room in action.

My starter material is awesome genetically (true OG - 15 Skywalker and 15 Pornstar), but a little tired. They were neglected in veg. Right off the bat I'm battling spider mites, PM, and general fatigue. Again, the genetics are the best, and I am confident I can bring them back to life and keep the mites away and the PM at bay!

For this grow, I will place 30 OG (Pornstar, and SkyWalker) in the trays with trellis. I will run 8 Madagascar on the floor, along with one big Pornstar on the floor. I will place the floor girls in tomato cages or stake them.

I will plant all of them out to 9 x 9 Active Aqua white square pots, with Roots O. The big OG on the floor is already in a 12 x 12 Active Aqua pot with RootsO/Basement mix.

Premium genetics in poor condition will yield better results than poor genetics in premium condition.

I'm starting with material that is a little rough, but of the finest quality.

To start, I can veg with just the 2 central metal halide lights.

I will follow with post-transplant pics.

Normally, I wouldn't go into flower with anything but super healthy plants. But these are already so big (stretched) I had to flip em. They look pretty tired as you can see in the pics, but the new growth is healthy and I am confident they will come around.

I use suphur burns to keep the PM at bay. There are no more signs of it since the initial showing on one or two plants - of course, it's already in the plants - but I hope to keep it from showing with sulphur burns at regular intervals (45 minutes every 7 - 10 days up to week 5).

I have not seen a live mite or additional mite damage since move in. I use Azatrol at regular intervals to control any mites and eggs that may still be around. Spray, then spray 3 days later, then spray 7 days later, then back to 3 etc -- through week 4... beyond that, there is little you can do to battle mites during weeks 5 - 8 without doing some damage to your flowers. If I'm lucky I will be able to get away with manual removal in the final days, should an outbreak occur.

I hate growing with such threats looming, but I am confident I can get through with some extra work--as if there weren't enough steps to this hobby already! haha

At Day 1 of flower the plants are still a little tired. Like the ugly duckling, this OG will transform into a beautiful swan.

Skywalker OG in the 2 right trays, and half of the center tray.

Pornstar OG in the 2 left trays, and half of the center tray.

The initial plant out of 28 went well. I removed 2 from the original 30 with excessive mite damage. I will fill in the trays shortly with 2 more OG. The floorshow will be 1 week behind.

Fast Forward: Currently I am on Day 10 of flower - and things look much better (last night anyway). I will get some pics tonight.

so much light... :) the girls have no choice but to love it.
no pest strips are pretty helpful when killing off an infestion of mites only early in flower though dont want to have that stuff in there while those nuggets are growing big.? i hate those little buggers... I dont see too much mite damage from here so things could go okay. good luck .. keep us posted.

Things are comin' around as I had hoped... I will remain diligent with my pest and PM defense. I will do a final prune of the suckers tomorrow, and place the trellis on the trays.

The Madagascar are currently in 2x2 trays, but they will go on the floor with tomato cages in the next few days. The Madagascar stretches exactly like OG.

45 days and counting.

At Day 11, things are looking up.

The Madagascar will rest in 2x2 trays before being placed on the floor.

With 45 days to go, things will be crowded in here soon!

And I have not seen a live mite for some time, but I know there are eggs out there - and I've seen lots of dead mites. I just sprayed again tonight (3rd night Azatrol). Good call on the pest strips. That reminds me--I have some sensor cards I've been meaning to place. Thanks. I'll need a little luck on this one! Yahoo!

Hey - nice to see you here. Thanks for stopping by. Wow - your journal is really deep now. I stopped by a few days ago to catch up on your work. Good job!

The Pornstar is the original SFV. I have been working with this one for years... It's the best. I just came across the SkyWalker by accident... a buddy paid for another strain, but got the SW by mistake (sometimes mistakes are good!) I have yet to work with this SW in my own zone, but I have seen two rounds of it now over my friends shoulder--and it is stellar too. The buds look silver they are so frosted. The SW has a little less stretch than the Pornstar and it is much easier to root--but they both have that gnarly OG taste (the bird and bat guano brings out that flavor in the OG).

The material was in RootsO - so I went with it. I was able to get it for $12 a bag. I would prefer to have gone Basement (my current favorite medium), but I do like to transplant using the same medium.

For nutes, I will be using mostly Botanicare -- PureBlend Pro, Liquid Karma, CalMag... for carbs I use Sweet from Botanicare, or Organic Sweet from Bloom. I also use the Humboldt Honey ES for a time... I will alternate feeds with Organic teas. PureBlendPro is basically organic -- all natural. OMRI bullshit prevents them from labeling it as organic any longer - but it is. LK is also natural as is Sweet. Short of some of my peak PK items and the CalMag - my nute regime is close to organic this time.

Grow on!

LR im running the exact nute line with added great white till 2nd week, aqua shield and celica blast. nothing else...but of course im in hydro, so i have been adding h202 2 days before res change. after res change its back to bc
ive had great results with botanicare n see no reason to stray lol
yea we sometimes fall in da ship n come out smelling like a rose:) if by design or mistake you scored...
they look to geve no sign damage or def caused by the pm or mites, great job of handeling those mfs before they got set in good.
im going to finish off these sour diesels n run a tribe of headband through. any experience with hb?

LR was meaning to ask, are you using fixed light height or have you done something to be able to adjust? i didnt see any way in your pic. if fixed what are the pros n cons of fixed verses adjustable in your oppinion...

Botanicare Pure Blend Pro has always been a favorite - it works, it's clean, it's available, and it's fairly natural. ...and they make the best trays!

Yeah - I've done HB before, but it wasn't the good HB. The good HB is really close to SourDiesel. You should be right at home with it!

Thanks, but I'm not out of the woods yet with the mites or the PM. I will continue to spray for 2 more weeks (at designated intervals), and sulphur burn until the end of week 5 (at designated intervals). Yes - things look good now, but I will keep fighting nonetheless; these are deadly foes I am up against!

Yes, I run a fixed light height. With ducted lights, I prefer to run em close (1 foot between) and just leave em at the highest point they will ever be. There are more advantages than disadvantages. First off -- notice I am running hoods intended to be hung high, unlike oversized hoods (Raptors, Magnums, etc) which are designed to run closer to the canopy. In a room with all open hoods (Adjust-a-Wings), I do raise and lower lights, as there is no ducting to worry about, and the hoods are so lightweight.

Advantages to leaving your lights at their max height.

  • no more messing with raising your lights!
  • no more messy extra ducting
  • better air circulation in the room (low lights hang right in the middle of the room and obstruct flow)
  • your lights run cooler as you can run shorter duct runs which allow more air per minute to flow over your bulbs
  • hot spots are less noticeable
  • lights at ceiling level will illuminate more plants than low hanging lights (which creates more cross lighting)
  • plants are cooler with more distance to the lights (I hang my lights 14" - 18" above where I anticipate the final canopy. If I were running a more squat strain, I would have my lights lower. The OG I run finishes at 5' - 6' so the canopy is quite high; hence the lights at the very top of the ceiling.)
Disadvantages to fixed height lights

  • light diminishes by half, every foot from the source

i like them short n stought lol i keep the light about a foot away. im a little anal that way. cant stand to loose light or floor space. both are at a premium to me lol
shoot us an update, i love watching young ladies come into season:)

I know you're anal about all facets of growing - that's why you do it so well! ;-)

I've been busy and have not had time to post pics lately - but I have so many good ones I'd like to share. Here are a few to get back up to speed.

At day 14 I placed the first trellis.

At day 15 I gave them a spray with Azatrol. Here they are with the main lights off and ready to receive.

At 17 days, these trays of OG are coming along nicely.

Skywalker OG occupies the right side of the room.

Pornstar OG camps out on the left.

Things are pretty tidy underneath and watering is still easy.

The Madagascar is 10 days behind, but finishes a week earlier than the OG.

This is my first time personally with the Skywalker OG. I ran a faux batch of SkyWalker here in another journal. I have been working with the Pornstar for some years now. I am really happy to be growing her again.

LOOKING REALLY GREAT LR!!! i hear good ship re the skywalker, ill do a run or two one of these days. meanwhile ill do it through you :)
i like the way you set up the support trellis. at what heighth do you set the final? you said they finush stretch at 5 to 6 feet. i would guess 55" or so, or do you let stretch finish n set accordingly?
