Any Other Kindle Users?

I recently got one of these for my birthday, and I've got to say it's one of the coolest things ever. The screen is a total friggin' trip. It seriously looks like ink on paper. Direct sun at high noon and it's still crystal clear.

I can't recommend it highly enough to anyone that enjoys reading.

You've resparked my interest! I approached the decision of buying one a couple years back, but opted out. I figured they'd only get better and cheaper, and I was right! I need some good reads, and it seems so practical now.

They're fantastic, seriously. If you like to read at all, you won't be disappointed. At first I didn't get as much joy out of reading using a kindle, but I got used to reading e-books and now I can't live without it.

Sorry, there is just something about a book. No batteries, no tech stuff, it's simple, it's always there. I can put it on a shelf. I can buy other books and put them on a shelf next to the first one. I can loan them out to friends. It helps my rather weak ego. And by just looking at them makes me feel smarter and more important than I actually am.

Nope, I think a kindle is a ways off for me.

I know man, I like having just the book too. With a kindle it's good but you always have to have that shit charged. What if some gnarly shit happened or you misplace that thing man. I don't know, they aren't the best reasons, but I just like being able to have to information ON PAPER. Then again I don't read fiction because I think it's a waste of time so maybe the Kindle isn't for me, maybe I should stick to the good ol pen and paper.

Honestly charging a kindle is hardly a con. The new ones stay charged for a month.

Spend a week with one, I dare you. I double dare you. You can send it back for a full refund if you decide you don't like it. You won't.

I know what you're saying man, but even if it stayed charged for a year I would still prefer a book. I mean it's just like I said man, I never like being the High-Tech guy, just because there are just as good of ways that have been around. But to each his own, I mean you and me are the examples, I don't like it and you do.
I mean I've used them and It's a great piece of technology don't get me wrong, I just think it's a bad use for MY type of reading. I'm sure if I read stories and novels that were fiction I would love to be able to carry around all of them in that, I just like to have something physical to open and read/write on with my hands, I'm not sure if you do but I like getting close to a book- each has it's own feel and thats just certain people.

haha i know, I'm a picky bastard

I charged mine when I first got it, and I'm now just one bar down on the battery. It's been 11 days.

I totally get what you are saying, man. If you're not into reading novels, it's not for you.

I use a netbook. It is capable of reading pdf files, and can do light internet tasks as well. Add a set of headphones and it'll play mp3's. I'm using it right now to post this to all you cool folks out there. So far I have read World War Z, Angels and Demons, The DaVinici Code, all the Harry Potters, countless tech papers, and even more user guides. I bought it for around $350, so it's about 3 times as expensive, but has 10 times the functionality.

I must agree that there is a certain somatic quality to opening a book. The feel of the paper under your fingers, the soft flutter the pages make, and the smell of a freshly minted leather cover. It's just that there are so many benefits to e-books. They don't need paper, so that's one less drain on our valuable woodlands. You can give them to friends and keep your copy to read as well. You can hold an entire library on your computer. So yes, I can see how there is something lost with electronic reading media, but there is so much to be gained as well.

That's not at all like reading on a kindle. Seriously. It's the display that makes all the difference. I've never seen anything like it.

Trust me. I would very much prefer reading a paperback to reading a pdf on any normal display.

Definitely. It's like your staring at ink and paper. The display is fantastic. Another plus is the weight. I find it way more enjoyable to hold a kindle and read, then have my 13" macbook on my lap and read from that.
