hi, been having an argument with a friend for a while now, he says you cant grow cannabis plants under a 400w light because they wont flower but i think you can

so the question is can i grow good cannabis plants full cycle under 400w
they are currently under 600w hps and leaves are burning and temps are stupid over 100f with light on and not under 73 with light off.

so would putting a 400w light make a big difference to the temps??
Yes, but my guess is with the 400 your temps will still not go down enough to solve your problem with heat. You need to look into ventilation/cooling and if you do it right, depending on your grow environment, you can solve the heat issues and keep the 600.

benn looking at air cooled reflectors, would this be the way to go?

lol why do i have a feeling this so called "friend" is imaginary. Asking question doesn't make you look dumb :-)

You can tell your "friend" to pick up a botany book. That's like saying if its gloomy outside vegetables and fruits wouldn't grow due to the low lumens. LOL

The solution you're looking for depends on a number of things. The general idea is to move hot air out of your grow area and replace it with cooler air. You need to think about where that cooler air comes from, whether it be from in the immediate/adjacent room or from outside. If you're in a closet, that hot air has to vent somewhere else there's no cool air to be had. Air-cooled reflectors do a great job at moving heat from the light out of your grow area quickly. There will still be some radiant heat from the reflector, you'll still need to move that air elsewhere too...

With the temps you are having now it seems safe to assume that you have that light in a closet or other small enclosed space -- either that or in a hot space like a garage. In either case, if you're using an air-cooled reflector and just venting it into that same small space, you're not solving anything. Again, hot air must be replaced with cooler air in order to affect your temps with any significance.

it is in a closet with a 4in fan moving the hot air out of a opening in a window in the bedroom, my friend wants to get a 6in fan to move the hot air out of the closet and use the 4in fan to bring in colder air, its a so called joint grow but as he puts all the money in i pretty have to do what he says, lol

No you don't. If he doesnt have the knowledge its up to you to let him know YOUR choices are the ones that are gonna bring a larger higher quality harvest. Some rookie with money thinking hes gonna run the full show with no knowledge isnt a good recipe for either of you guys :)

Your not saying 400w what. A 400w MH is a completely different monster. They are crap for veg you'ld need extra clfs. A MH 1000w will get 5500k blue, and a MH conversion buld gets some red, i heard these are ok for flower. You should make youself some big can reflectors and 3/4 6500k cfls and swith to the 400hps for flower.
