Cool, thanks for the info. I looked at heath's stuff, and it looks like its all vertical grows but it def looks interesting Only 1 water pump needed. Looks a little bit too advanced for me right now though.

but I second chronic. I would like to see more complete pictures of your set up as well. How is your veg/flowering room separated? Thanks

It may seem advanced but it's actually about as easy as it gets, for me anyway.

I grew once with soil and then tried individual DWC buckets on my next grow, That lasted about 3 weeks into veg before I knew I had to connect them and recirculate, for the ease of dealing with one res that stays at the same level in the grow containers.. and a larger res needs way less frequent maintenance.

Heath does seem to use almost all vertical lighting yeah... It's by far the most efficient thing to do. Glass over your bulb in a hood blocks out some spectrum, and about 5-10% depending if it's perfectly clean or slightly dirty. Only thing is for someone planning to get their cultivation licence like me, there's no point in learning to grow like that because they do inspections here on medical grows and everything has to be to code, bare bulbs aren't allowed.

I'll take some more pics tonight, I believe it's weekly picture update time of the bud closet. The bud closet is just to the left of the vegging cab.

That bait oxygenator looks like it uses the venturi effect, not an actual air pump, but a water pump with an air snorkel on the water inlet, the vacuum draws air in, the impeller chops it up into tiny bubbles, and shoots it out with the water. You can make one with any water pump by adding an air snorkel with a valve to adjust on the water pump inlet. I might actually give this method a go next time.
I cant seem to figure out how to keep my res cool with that pump in there. I like how you rigged up your air pump, how would you get around the heat problem?

I use a 70 LPM commercial air pump running 8 stones into a 100 L igloo cooler and my rez temps stay around 67-69 with no water chiller.
With an insulated plastic cooler you shouldn't have too much of an issue with rez temps.
If you do then pour some ice in there and try to keep it away from the roots til it melts. I don't like using frozen bottles for a few reasons.

That's what nice about a remote res that recircs, you just put the ice in there and it never touches your roots.

The PC fans on the sides on the air pump really help to keep it cool, otherwise it gets quite hot while operating, which means it will pump hot air. If you can put your airpump outside your grow room, even better, the cooler the air you can draw with your air pump, the better. I also have a long length of 3/8" air hose coiled on the ground before it goes into the coolers, this is where it loses more heat created by the pumping action and comes back down to ambient. You can run your hand along the line and feel it getting cooler as it goes along.

Still though, if your ambient room temp is 80F, and you're pumping 70LPM pump in a 100L igloo, the water will pick up the air temp and heat up over time, coolers are supposed to be sealed, pumping a crapload of room temp air through them doesn't help them stay cool. Saving grace is most probably night-time temps when air is closer to where you want your water temp. Coolers do still help a lot though, with radiant heat and heat conduction.

One major reason I want to ditch the air pump next time and just go high flow water like Heath is so my coolers will be nearly sealed then, and much more easy to keep cool.

Watts is more applicable to talk about different pumps (water or air), as LPM or GPH is measured at a certain pressure, which for an air pump is based on how deep the water is that it's pumping into, and for a water pump, how high it must pump the water, AKA head pressure. Any manufacturer can tweak the stats to look better or worse, an eco 20 watt pump could list for 70LPM, while a high quality 60W pump might also be 70LPM but rated at a much higher pressure, which would mean more flow at lower pressures. Just for future reference, I notice everyone comparing pumps with each other's setups using GPH and LPH when we should be doing it in Watts, which is the actual power of the pump.

Another reason is because my 45W air pump is too powerful for my setup. When I had it running 3 6" stones in each 5 gal bucket I had a doughnut hole in each of my root balls from an overpowering torrent of bubbles, I can tell now from putting the air around the outside of the root zone that the roots are growing much better, and all the way to the bottom. If you wanna go the air route I'd really suggest going with high end ceramic air discs that really break it up into tiny bubbles. I think lots of people probably do more harm than good with too much air on their roots and don't even know it. If I were to run it again, I'd do it in my remote res, but I doubt I'll even do that. Maybe I'll take the fans off and use it as a water heater in the winter.

Very true.. I change my rez weekly so that also helps with rez temps staying lower.
As it starts to reach the 70 mark. I change it at the end of the week and set it back to like 65 .
If I let it go 2-3 weeks without changing with fresh cool water then I may have more issues.
When I was using the Rubbermaid container I would reach 80 degree rez temps easily. No more RM for me.

Ok fellas, weekly picture update of the buds, doing some nice swelling. Seems I let the water level drop a little too much without topping it up and PPMs went a little high causing some slight burn, but nothing I'm concerned about, still growing like crazy.

Here you can see my shelf/wall setup held on with magnets and all (fairly) air tight with weather stripping. The room used to be a laundry room, but now laundry is downstairs, was used as some lady's art room before I bought the place, so it's all kinda mucked up, which makes a perfect utility room with a secret weed closet and cab that kinda blend right in. The fan sucks through the light hood and blows out up above the veg cab through a carbon filter and up and over the wall. Ballasts are up there too with the carbon filter, cooled by the outgoing air.

Incoming air comes up from the basement bellow passively, into the bottom of the veg cab, then up through the top and into the bottom of the bud closet.

Any more questions feel free to ask, thanks for all the nice comments.

Nice room, gives me an idea how I'm going to lay out my spot once I move. One thing I think would help is if you put shoe molding next to the bookcase. Cause it looks like the linoleum runs under the wall, rather than being cut off at the wall like it typically would be.

Did you build everything your self? Shelving, hinges, etc. I was thinking about just buying a hidden shelf set with hinges, but it would probably be expensive.

For your veg door, it looks like you just built a box yourself and the door completely pulls out?

Thanks guys.

I had molding I was planning to put on with velcro on along the wall, shelf, and floor, so it would be removable to take things apart. I built everything except the bookshelf, it was already there. There are no hinges though, I just line up the seals as I put it back together and the magnets along with the negative pressure the fan creates holds everything together, it feels like a fridge when it closes. Veg cab works the same way.

Medical licence coming soon, so I'm not bothering to do the velcro moldings I have planned. The whole room itself has been hidden for a while, and I'm going to fire up another 1000W and start doing 4 plants, put both 1000Ws in the main part of the room. Going to move my veg operation to the bud closet, and go with a zipper open door. I hope my 250W halide is enough to veg 4 plants to a decent size, I have another 250W, but they're both old magnetics that suck 306W in total with ballast loss. Probably best to just upgrade to a 400W halide with an electronic ballast, I'm always concerned with efficiency.

Looking into what hood to get now. I have a silverstar that seems great, but it's not CSA certified, and I need that for my legal grow, so I think I'm going to go with one of these:

Gonna do some more research, haven't found any other CSA or UL certified hoods, anyone know of any others?

Man, must be nice to be able to get a med license for this. In my state they put me away for 5 years minimum. I didnt know magnetic ballasts lose efficiency over time, what are you using to test how much it puts out? So electronic ballasts dont lose efficency? Only reason I wanted magnetic was for CMH bulbs.

Not over time, they're just less efficient to start with. They waste more power as heat converting to the output the bulb needs than electronic ballasts do.

5 years! Ouch!

I know a guy who had 18 plants in his basement illegally. Cops went in a couple months back and just whacked down all his plants and left.. Didn't take any equipment, no charges laid. They only really seem to crack down on the larger organized crime Vietnamese and HA grows. Ma and Pa operations are kinda what they're trying to promote from what I can see here... You get 1 patient and have to provide 4 ounces/month, and they give you a 20 plant licence to do this and tell you that they can come pick up your extra "compost" or you can deal with it yourself.... Gee I wonder what I'd rather do with my extra "compost" from 20 plants.

If it were 5 years minimum here, I wouldn't be having anything to do with this... I'm way too pretty for jail.

Hahah nice. U remind me of some kinda real cool engineer shafto very smart for sure. Nobody likes jail lol! I was the most paranoid grower that exhisted before I got my medical certification and at least state legal rights to grow I guess. I follow the script to the T now but there is that worry in the back of the mind somewhere that it is still federally illegal CRAZY. THAT'S good news tho. I got a family grow fro pain relief so its more settleing to me anway that if they do come in there just gonna chop my little twelve plants down and maybe take my lites and move on. Cool.
Good stuff man had to comment sorry for the mini jack that was way off topic really but ur post made me think.
Keep up the good work man.

Hey you said that your friend got his crop chopped by the cops who just left without pressing any charges.
Did they leave anything to let your buddy know it was the cops who did it? How did he know it was the cops?
MY plants were taken once too. My house was broken into but nothing else was taken. My PS3, laptop, Ipod, everything was in the same room and nothing was stolen. None of the growing equipment was stolen either, which, to me, seems weird for a home invasion. If it were me, I would have stolen everything.

Thanks Chronic Monster.

Beans you bring up a good point. I've heard of another instance where the police were impersonated and the search warrant was faked to get into the house, then once they were in they wanted to know where the grow was. I don't think this was the case however in the 18 plant situation I mentioned, they actually had a squad car and everything. More pics tomorrow for my weekly update. I did let them get a bit burned, they drank so fast! Nothing serious though, just a few spots on some leaves. I want to set up an auto top up feature on the res so that won't happen again. Everything starting to swell up pretty nicely!
