What distance do you usually have it from the canopy of the plants? I usually have mine about 2foot away...not sure what is the best distance tho to maximise area coverage and efficiency...
 
All depends on ambient temps, ventilation, light wattage so it varies quite a bit.

1. Just put your hand at the height of the plant canopy and feel for heat.
2. Watch out for slight burning at the tips.

I had one of those cooltubes (cops smashed it through spite when I was raided and they couldnt find shit)
 
My plant canopies are 8-12 inches from my cooltube...400w hps...with one centrifan exhausting thru tube with another 4" centri fresh air intake blowing on tube itself...In a tent, adjustability for temp control is a must...I do suppliment ac into tent at times thru ducts....
 
ditto, no more than 8 inches close with a 400 hps. Mine is probably around 10 and I have a small fan blowing more or less into the tube that circulates air throughout my closet.
 
cool, just wondering, does having the light higher above the canopy spread the light better?? as having it real close will leave some bits of plants a bit shaded compared to others wont it... a mate of mine has his light about 2 and half foot above canopy, looks quite high, but it seems hes able to illuminate a bigger space this way...
 
yes it will spread the light better but you dont want a 400 or 600 2 and a half foot from your plant, has your friend not got a 1000 hps? if you have the light to far the plants will suffer, 8-10 inches for a 400-600 with cooltube,
 
Na hes got a 600 aswell, but without a cooltube, hes got a wider reflector, although his temps are very high. I need to try and make a big reflector really but im shit at makiing things like that, anyone got any advice on making a bigger reflector for cooltubes and how to fit em?

Not sure what you're saying here. Air cooled reflectors come in all sizes, you don't have to build one. Here is an inexpensive large reflector that is air-cooled:

^^^ its perfectly simple what im saying....I already have a cooltube (glass air extracted tube with a lamp in it) and they come standard with a crappy little reflector. So instead of ditching the cooltube which cost me £40 and buying a large air cooled hood for £100 i may aswell try and get hold of a reflector to attach to the existing cooltube, making it better...get what i mean? lol
 
go get yourself a standard 10quid open reflector , cut the aluminium wings off , pop some holes into the new wings inline with your cooltube U brackets and bolt your new wings in place of the original cooltube wings.

this is excactly what i did and works alot better than the standard wings,
i do think tho that the footprint of the cooltube is no where near what a hood can bring.
im using 3 600w cooltubes in a 2.4 x 1.2 and plan on changing to 2x magnum xxxl hoods,
