Too many variables/unknowns to give a real solid answer...

Tent size?
lighting amount?
strains?
veg and flowering length?
style of grow (SOG, from seed, from clone?)

Rule of thumb is to use the biggest pots you can fit.....dont listen to people tat tell you container size doesnt matter, thats an untruth. Ive run clones from the same mother in different sized pots. The yield was bigger as the post got bigger. ...I now use 5 gallon smart pots. Love 'em

I've got 12--- 3'-4' Jillybeans in 2.5 gallon pots under a 1000 watt hps fit into roughly a 3'x5' area (but I actually have a 7'x7' space for growing under my cal king loft bed-- haha) they all get good light with the furthest plant being about 32" from center......if I had thought it out better I would have gone with a 5 Gallon Square pot which takes up about as much room [horizontally] as my 2.5 gallon pots.

i bet if you look at the stalks of your plants you will see signs of them being rootbound.

I harvested 2 plants recently and didn't notice any problems when I dumped the pots, the yields look decent so far so I'm not too worried....only 9 days left anyhow.
Also, as I said I'd rather have had the 5gal square pots

Just because you didn't notice any problems does not mean that they were not root bounded, reducing your yield and growth. the base of the stalks of your plants will tell you if your plants were root bound at all.

Obviously it depends, but i'd suggest a gallon per foot of height and 2/2 space. If you intend 2 foot plants to cover a 2/2 space each do 2 gallons(a foot of soil in the buckets not counted). If you intend for them to be 5 feet and cover a 2x2 space do 5 gallons. If you intend for them to be 3 feet and cover a 2/2 space each do 3 gallons. Plants a little smaller than 2x2 feet such as a sea of green 1x1 foot and you can go with a smaller bucket. Plants a little bigger than 2x2 feet and go with a bigger bucket. I'm suggesting this as the height you expect when you end flowering. Don't let a plant in a 3 gallon bucket reach 3 feet before flowering or else they'll be root bound before they finish flowering... you'd want to go with a 5 gallon pot because they'd finish at about 4-5 feet.
