Heat From Light, Burn Plant

Hey guys,

last week friday i switched from cfls to a 600 w hps light. I checked on them the next day and this is what they looked like.



i had the light 2 ft away from the tops with no fan blowing air between so I think i just cooked them.

I stopped using the hps and went back to cfl. this was today


I think they're looking better but any advice to help them recover? I'm in a dwc setup fyi

yeah man two feet is way too close without a fan, cooltube or both. I'd suggest at least 3ft if not more. I run two 400w hps and keep them about a 1.5ft away. One has a cool tube and I can get it slightly closer. The other is a shitty reflector and I keep a small fan running right below the light to dissipate the heat. You'll get awesome results with a 600w hps. Just make sure its far enough away. Also keep the CFLs going as side lighting if you can.

Idk man, I use a 600 HPS, and hardly ever use the air-cooling, most of the time using an open reflector, and keep it 18" or less, always. Looks like your plants failed to keep themselves hydrated in that setup, and drooped badly, which seems odd for DWC. Is there a possibility that the reservoir isn't full enough? High heat and low humidity?

the res was a little low so i added new water. I've heard when switching lights to use it for 2 hrs one day, 4 the next, etc. have you done this before?

^I'm guessing it was the reservoir man, not the lights. My plants go from vegging under T8 flouros, directly under the 600 HPS, and it doesn't phase them one bit. My light is placed alot closer than your's too, which leads me to believe it was the reservoir. If the light was too hot, the leaves would burn, but the plant wouldn't wilt and fall over like that. Keep those levels up, and you should be perfectly fine(as long as the heat and humidity are reasonable).

Yeah it looks like it was your reservoir. If you look at your leaves when they're burning from heat, they curl upwards and inwards and the tips start drying out and breaking and your plant is still very green. Good thing you caught this early enough.

holy shit man... thats the craziest thing ive heard of lol no disrespect but 2 ft... my 400w hps would cook a tree if it was 2ft away lol deffinatly cooked em should put them in brownie mix first haha

thats weird i keep my 600 watt hps cooltube with no cooling at all 14'' away from my plants with no burning at all..maybe its because the glass i dont know

could be the reservoir or a combination of both factors, but to re-iterate what I said above - the cool tube reflector does tone down the heat in a real sort of way. I'm able to bring the cool tube 400w hps way closer than I could ever think of bringing the old school open air reflector, even with a small fan constantly on the exposed hps bulb.

Toss that 600 back in there.Just put it up pretty high and drop it some to where you want it over a 3 or 4 day period......you should be fine.Oh.....and keep da rez topped off.
