Wayne County Sheriffs Dept. Busts Massive Marijuana Operation
Deputies Uncover High-Tech Growing Operation, Hundreds Of Plants Seized
POSTED: Saturday, April 9, 2011 - UPDATED: 11:03 pm EDT April 9, 2011 -
DETROIT -- Four suspects are behind bars after deputies from the Wayne County Sheriffs Department uncover a large-scale marijuana growing operation on Detroits west side.
The operation was uncovered at about 4 p.m. Saturday in a three-story warehouse on Loraine Street, near the Interstate 96-Interstate 94 interchange.
After receiving a tip, the sheriffs department told Local 4 that investigators staked out the building for several weeks before making the bust.
Upon making the bust Saturday, authorities said they were shocked to find a high-tech growing operation with timed lights and watering systems.
More than 700 marijuana plants were confiscated in the bust, authorities said.
The sheriffs department believes the growers spent large amounts of money to grow large amounts of marijuana quickly.
Authorities said this is a big win for their crack-down on drugs in Wayne County.
We found upwards of $750,000 worth of drugs that wont be going into Wayne County neighborhoods and the streets and to individuals who abuse those drugs, Paula Bridges of the Wayne County Sheriffs Department said.
The pot growers are also suspected of stealing electricity from DTE Energy, authorities said.
The search is on for other suspects connected to the growing operation.
The four arrested suspects will be in court next week for an arraignment.
