LEDs Anyone? Advise Please

:leaf:I've been researching LED lights, one site says go with 1 watt bulbs others say go with 2-3 watt bulbs. What is true? Whats a reliable well made LED light brand, that is proven to work? I'm working with a tight budget and really like the benefits of going with cool running LEDs, over the high heat of other lights. Not to mention the electricity cost and extra cooling necessary with traditional lighting systems. I want to add a couple of panels when I go into flowering, to supplement my 8 4' T5's. Growing in a 4'9"x4'9"x6'5" grow-lab tent. Any advice on how many I'd need for good coverage?:leaf:

nah not necessarily so. yes they are expensive. but for veg anyway i have two blackstar 280s. love em. fuckin love em. two 280 watt blackstars with 3 watt leds only pull around 260 watts total. i would compare the light coverage to a 400 watt mh.=around 40%power savings and i havent even factored in heat. or lack of heat. they run VERY cool.
there are many good brands but for the money imo blackstar is the way to go. either way it is my understanding that the higher watt leds are more efficient than the 1 watters. LED USERS UNITE is a good thread check it out it seems to be dying off lately but there is a lot of good info there
for flowering on the other hand the verdict is still out for me.but there are plenty of good grows going on currently w/led only
btw isis and spectra are supposed to be pretty good too. you really need to check out LED USERS UNITE kessil lights are supposed to be the best but there has been some concern lately due to defective lights

dont let the haters get you down despite what many ppl say there have been many successful grows w/leds here ledbudguy is one good guy to check out

You are right they are good for veg and do pull off nice grows.But two things i have to say 1.ledbudguy was called out and decided to leave because he was lying so i wouldnt say check him out.
2.They are too costly and would not get the penetration a hid can get you.You would really have to have your grow dialed in in all factors to out perform a hid + the claims on the led are really misleading like how they say 90 watt ledd = 400 hps thats straight bs and so on with the rest.
For you to have a good led light you will pay more than 3 or 4 hps lights which in turn would mean you spend way more money.Paying 1000 for a good led light instead of getting a good 1000 watt digital ballast,bulb and reflector for 250 or 300 at most and be out performing that led light and its costs..
I dont see no leds being used in getting pounds every 2-3-4 week grows

yup not gonna argue the cost thing but i have em and i can say that they penetrate pretty well. believe me or not. and dont forget the cost of electric for wattage consumed a/c costs bulb replacement. imo if you have the startup cash go led all the way. but you better have the loot.there is no question that 90 watt led does not even come close to a 400 watt hps that is total marketing bs and gives all led manufacturers a bad name. all i can say is from my EXPERIENCE with 400 watt mh is that my two 280 watt blackstar veg units do a DAMN good job lighting up my 2x4 stinkbud aero sytem and they only burn around 130-140 watts each. although i probably will add another 280 just cuz.
oh and the temp in my veg room dropped 20 degrees after removing the 400 mh

I do believe you im not saying you are lying.Yes the electricty consumption will be down because its not using the full wattage like you say.A 280 blackstar uses 130-140 watts so of course the consumption will be down.But Put 400 watts it will be the same consumption a watt is a watt no matter how you put it.
If you have 400 watts of led and 400 watts of hid the price will be the same in consumption because like i said a watt is a watt.But most led lights say 400 watts and would be pulling 200 watts so thats what would make the bill lower honestly.
I would like to try led one of these days and do a side by side comparison myself to see if i like it.But i tell you one thing i love my hid because thats all i know besides t5s and cfls.but hopefully one day when led prices come down i will get a nice led light and use it with my hps after i do a side by side comparison

i was following that thread off and on and for a soil gro and a small one those girls looked pretty good last time i looked
ahhh anyway there are led users and there are hid users i personally use a bit of both and believe the pros outweigh the cons. you are right about one thing there are no massive led grows that i am aware of most of the led grows here are pretty small but i submit not because it is not possible but more because no one wants to drop 4k just in lights. although i do remember over in ledusers unite one guy ordering something like 18- 280 watt blackstars that grow would be nice to follow. but i cant remember who it was.

If you find out link me to it.Like i said i would love to one day get my hand on a led light but the only one i find i would buy would be a 90 watt ufo for 150 but i dont think it owuld be a good buy..
How much did you pay for your black star 280?
I think i would get that for veg and just add it with my 400 to flower and see the difference it adds..I was going to get a 600 after this harvest i sell some and get a digiatal 600 watt and a led light should be a nice combo.

I'm pretty sure ledbudguy was working for that light company. I have a total of 8 240 blackstars. 6 flower and 2 veg models. Don't have a beginning to end yet. I have two 3 week olds that are under led but I'm going to be using them

like 270 w/free shipping go to ebay and send victor an email he can invoice pay pal directly he saves on ebay fees so he'll deal. anyway i am not saying that hid does not produce more "bang for your buk" i seem to remember a post somewhere that had a grow w/led only and they had figured that they saved 30 percent on electric and only dropped 15percent in yield from previous grows. it seems plausible. but definitely if you dont have the extra cash go hid cuz spending 500-700 upfront to light a 2x4 area is not the most cost effective.but i feel i must qualify my example a bit. my two blackstars did a great job lighting up said 2x4 stinkbud sys. until my girls got around12-14inches tall.but they are such bushes now that i think a third fix would be optimum after around 3 weeks veg. however for me 12-14 inches is max veg height as this aero-system. is producing some incredible growth.so a third light to me would probably only be necesary if i were to flower under led as well. so with these kind of results i must conclude that two blackstars drawing 270 watts total versus one 400 watt mh pulling around 430 watts.equals about 30 buks a month savings for me.x twelve mo. =360$ this is not factoring a/c in the summer. i believe this to be pretty good payoff.factor in replacing bulbs 2x a year..... i think i should also mention that the light coverage is damn even since there is a light over pretty much the entire system @around 15 inches off the canopy much better penetration around perimeter of garden with my leds vs ol trusty mh.

how much area you trying to cover w/your flowering models? veg models?
bout how high off the canopy ?

Yeah ill look into getting either 1 or 2 black stars and see if i like the led maybe one so i dont shoot myself in the foot.

led is not a wise option for the price vs performance...that is the truth...fact...anything else is bull crap hype for you very dirty dollar...but it is your dollar so waste it if you want
