edit: ok, i actually tried this, and i have to reprt a problem. a 188-cfm booster fan was not strong enough to push air through the cotton air filter. did i do something wrong? it seems that 188 cfms should be enough... so i turned it around and am now pulling air through the car filter and then the carbon, although now I think carbon dust is going into the air... any ideas?

that is actually what i do now. get a scouring pad or alternatively a piece of sponge and cut to fit between the carbon and the net. it will stop the dust escaping.

actually, a related point... if you're using sponge to hold the carbon dust, then is there any need for the actual car air filter? in other words, if you have some carbon in a net bag and sponges on either side, and fit that whole contraption in the "in" side of the fan, will that do the same thing?

Seems like a cheap and easy way of doing a filter. Most I see are put inside the grow cab pulling thru the filter. Is this one meant to go outside the cab and have the air pushed thru it rather than be pulled? Which works best? I'll have to get me a good fan. Anyone used this with good results?

so in the roof of my tent if you were to look you should see the cone shaped filter, and inside the filter have the carbon dumped in, with a sponge on top?. then on top of the roof have the 6 inch inline fan(400 cfm i think) with that just venting into the room. is this correct? and would this be adequate for a 40x40x70 tent with a 400 mh/hps? sorry if this has been asked alot. im on my psp. very pain in the ass. but this thread was too awesome to pass

I've seen cone filters that are bigger- with more space inside to put activated carbon. Is that better, or will having too much carbon restrict the airflow?
Otherwise, I'll just stick with the same cone filter as the TS.

Obviously this would depend on what size cone you using for your air filter but how much charcoal was needed to fill your air filter?
