the 10 mistakes i've made... thought i might share with you

1. when i first started with my DWC system, i used a clear plastic tote which attracted a shit load of algae... and after algae bloom dies, the DO level in my water dropped to 3-4 ppm. i ended up getting root rot.

2. my second try... i mylar taped the plastic tote to make it light proof and reflective. this time i didnt soak rockwool in 5.5 PH solution... my new seedlings grew slowly and became nutrient locked. i had flushed the rockwool with 5.5PH solution to bring the PH up... the seedlings started to thrive.

3. being cheap on airstones and airpumps. i went to walmart and got the cheapest pumps and airstones... worst mistake ever. the 14$ pump stopped working while i was at work and i came home to a stinky reservoir. now i run on 3 150Gal pumps and 6 8.5" air discs. costs alot more but never had that problem again

4. putting plants too close to LEDs.. even though LED dont produce heat, they still burned my plants when i put them too close. dumbest mistake i made.

5. dont tend to your garden stoned. i got too stoned and i nuked my reservoir with nutes by accident. plus i knocked over a bottle of PH down.. hahaha now i got a super fucked up carpet.

6. dont foilar feed with hard water if u have hard water.. my old plants looked like they asked me for a white christmas... hardwater stains are hard to get rid of... :(

7. i spent over 3 grand on my system and i havent produced 1 crop because of my carelessness.. whereas my friend grow with 4 t5s and soil and he has better plants than me. (so sad) now i regret doing that, i should have just stick with lights and soil. prob much easier than hydro and all that shit.

8. low humidity is one of the other prob i had.. i had everything set up besides R humidity (was in the teens) had stunted growth, and when i got a humidifier, everything started growing.

9. the only thing i didnt get for my hydro system was stuff to help strengthen roots. i didnt know shit about plants or growing any kind of plants, so weed is the first thing i've ever grew. didnt know anything about the importance of roots... now i use sensizym, subculture M and B to help my roots... they look alot better now, root rot is slowly going away.

10. hot reservoir temperature. i read a journal on aquatic life and Dissolved Oxy levels... every 10C increase demands like an additional temperature while O2 retaining properties declines... after learning from master growers from this forum (thank to all of you that helped me), i keep my reservoir at 62-68F.

haha. i hope this will help new growers! dont make the same mistakes i did!

Good information. I have made some of the same mistakes and still battling with root issues in my DWC. Going to use hygrozyme next time.

Good observations. Regarding #5, I tried to mix up a gallon of nutes once while totally out of my mind. I put in like 3 times more GH Flora micro than I needed. I then tried to dilute it by mixing 3 containers. Long story short, I ended up with 3 containers with 3 vastly different ppm. I wound up pouring expensive nutes on my outdoor flower bed because I was too high to pay proper attention to my mix.

Best of luck to you with your current grow. I hope you don't have to learn any more lessons the hard way!

you should switch over to soil or coco, you can still make stupid mistakes but, they are easier corrected.

nice list. shame to spend so much and feel like you've gotten nothing out of it...

I have no humidity here and my plant seems to grow well. What's the deal? Seems like people always say it is required but maybe it depends on the plant?

i guess it depends on the plant and your nutes. i guess in dry conditions, your plant uses more water and you need less concentrated nutes

oh i start nuting plants like 2 weeks after they germinated with like quarter strength solution

lol just for shits an grins i took a empty gatoraid bottle an spray painted it black i used a 2 inch net pot with rock pellets then i used superthrive for my roots to grow i also went to walmart bought a single bubble machine with a 6 inch long bubble tube... It worked perfectly for all cycles of growth i did learn that you must change the water out at lease once a week... it stinks !
