A telescope is an instrument designed to aid the observation of remote objects by collecting some form of electromagnetic radiation (such as visible light). The first known practical telescopes were invented in the Netherlands at the beginning of the 17th century. The word telescope can refer to a wide range of instruments detecting different regions of the electromagnetic spectrum.
The word "telescope" (from the Greek τῆλε, tele "far" and σκοπεῖν, skopein "to look or see"; τηλεσκόπος, teleskopos "far-seeing") was coined in 1611 by the Greek mathematician Giovanni Demisiani for one of Galileo Galilei's instruments presented at a banquet at the Accademia dei Lincei.[1][2][3] In the Starry Messenger Galileo had used the term "perspicillum

Meade is a quality product, I own an LXD75 series Meade telescope... it's expensive but there are also starter scopes. Just make sure to get one with the Autostar controller as it will take you right to your choice of 30,000+ night sky objects, planets, moons, mine will eve track the ISS if it's orbital plane crosses my location.

Here's a link to the store, just click on the product name to find out more about it.

Get a REFLECTING telescope if she's interested in viewing nebulae, galaxies, clusters, etc.
Get a REFRACTING telescope if she's interested in planetary/lunar viewing.

Personally, I would be searching for a Celestron, Meade, or Orion brand scope.
I was in it for quite a while, and these seem to be the best bang/buck.
