My females are at about 5 1/2 weeks of flowering and I am trying to figure out when it would be the best time to harvest. I was told that I can wait till about 7 weeks, cut the crown buds off the top of the plants and then I can continue to let the rest of the plant grow for another couple of weeks. Thus, making the other buds larger.

You will need to look at the trichomes on the bud to tell when they are ready. Just get a 30x magnifying glass and read gnomes post about them.

Ah i dont understand why people mess with cutting tops off and shit. Just harvest the thing all at once. Maybe Im the one missing out..i dunno know.

I thought that if 3/4 of the white hairs have turned brown then its time.
i've noticed over the years that when a bud is truly done it takes on a whole new look. it just looks done. most of the green growth is gone the hairs have browned, the pods have hardened and taken on a new color. and of course the trichromes have started to amberize. i have some now that i was not to sure of a couple days ago, today it is just plain obvious. the plant just looks different.

If you don't have a magnifier, there are several things to look for. The white hairs changing to rust is easy, but there will usually be some white hairs still around. The calyxs will plump up, they are where the seed would grow if pollenated. The trichomes will start to look like sugar crystals. When those get really sparkly, is a good time to harvest. If you don't have sparkle, you should wait.

Dudes, the "hairs" you refer to have nothing to do with ripeness. To accurately determine the time to harvest you need to look at the "crystals" (Trichomes).
I suppose that given many grows under ones belt, you would get to that point where you can JUST TELL by looking that they're done.
I've seen your grows. If anyone can just look at a bud, it's you!!!

3 days of rain is no good bro. I live in chicago and had to house them inside 4 a wk 2 finish cuz of the cold and rain that been coming. def had some buds w mold but not much. andd about the buds being redy-i definitely know what FDD is talkin bout.the sugar leaves on the buds get kinda crinkly in a way and take on a golden hue. good way of tellin wo the scope

with the 30x i heard look at the chrystals, they start clear and see thru and when they r done they turn a milky white and not see thru anymore and than any time after should be good for picking
