How many times can you top a plant?

So you know those plants out there that have like 20 stalks of bud? is that because the plant was just topped a million times or what? is it just the strain?

is it possible to top the plant several times in different locations for more bud growth?

any answers help, thanks!

There isn't really a limit to the number of times a plant can be topped, but each topping requires some time to rebound. Suppose you Vegged a plant for 12 weeks, topping every growth node, that would be a very spread out plant.

What I think you are referring to would be plant's that have been LST trained or Scrogged. Look up these methods to see if this is what you're seeing elsewhere.


Another way to get a lot of tops is by revegging a clone. This is done by taking a cutting from a plant that is 3 or 4 weeks into flowering and rooting it on vegetative lighting. It takes a deal of time for the plant to root and revert and grow to a substantial size but you can get some really cool stuff doing that too.

wow, so all these plants im seeing with the multiple bud stalks are more than likely just clones? you must yeild 3 or 4 times the amount of bud from a clone as to the original

Well... no... Most have been trained using a method of LST or Scrog. Very few are actually re-vegged clones. I mean, I guess technically in a scrog clones work better because they grow at the same rate. For the most part I think most people top once to try and get 4 tops, then use those 4 tops in an LST or Scrog to develop another 16 tops or more. By the time flowering starts it's easy to get dozens of bud sites with good training.

okay, i now understand how to perform low stress training on the plant thanks to youtube! haha, hopefully this helps me yeild a little more bud

I had a ton of stalks on mine and only topped a few times (from seed). As soon as I topped once It split into like 5 or 6 heads alone.(might be genetic) and I topped 3 other shoots too, to get like 10-13 big colas going on. Check it out in my 1000 watt bag seed grow. most the whole cabinet is one big plant.
