The team, the car, even the sentiment favored Dale Earnhardt Jr. heading into the Daytona 500 on Sunday at Daytona International Speedway.
Three years after his father was killed in a crash on the final lap of the Daytona 500, Earnhardt was poised to capture his first victory in this famed race, which annually opens the season of Nascar's top series.
Unlike his father, Earnhardt did not have to spend a career trying to win it.
He took the checkered flag Sunday in his fifth attempt and the first under the new series name, the Nextel Cup. Earnhardt passed Tony Stewart on Lap 181 of the 200-lap race and held him off to win by about four car lengths.
''This has got to be the greatest day of my life,'' the 29-year-old Earnhardt said as he stood in victory lane after an on-track celebration with his team. He had stopped on the track at the start/finish line, got out of the car and embraced his teammates as they raced out to greet him.
Earnhardt then drove his Chevrolet in circles through the infield before arriving in victory lane, six years to the day after his father won this race for the only time. Earnhardt said he felt his father's presence in the passenger side of the car with him as he drove for the victory on Sunday

oh yeah and if you don't think his crash was a set-up...Then you might as well keep smokin that ganja, he drove perfectly that fatal night and his car was tuned to perfection! But hey what do I know??? I'm just a pot-head right? and it's normal for people to crash on their final lap.....

Dale Earnhardt's death in the Daytona 500 on February 18 2001 occurred while he was behind the wheel of an object, that brought him more renown than his trademark moustache and sunglasses - that black No. 3 Chevrolet

I have been following NASCAR for some years now, and in my eyes Dale Earnhardt was the greatest driver on the track and the nicest guy off the track. He lived his life racing, and his life ended racing.
He died doing what he loved, we will miss his spirit on and off the track.

In countries all over the world, the name of the man referred to as "The Intimidator" was known. They may not have known what NASCAR was all about, but they knew the name Dale Earnhardt.
The Fans all around the world will never forget him and remember all the great races!
I'm sure he is looking down at us with his great smile, cheering on the ongoing races,
and beeing proud of Dale jr.

Part of his legacy will be that he made a name for himself by being the best at what he did.
To many of his competitors, the true legacy of Earnhardt stemmed far beyond the racetrack

Dale Jarrett, 1999 Winston Cup champion, said:
"As millions of race fans mourn the loss of the man they knew as 'The Intimidator,' the sport and the race that he truly loved has taken from me one of my best friends. I know I should feel fortunate that I had the opportunity to race with, tangle with, sometimes outrun, and like most, usually finish behind, the greatest driving talent NASCAR racing has ever seen. I am thankful for that opportunity but, more importantly, I am most grateful that I had the chance to know Dale Earnhardt in a way that so many people could only dream of. He was a true friend -- someone I could always depend on to give me an honest answer and, at the very least, his opinion. I looked up to him not only because of his driving skills, but because he was so much more to so many people, including me and my family. Kelley and I choose to remember this incredible racer for his caring and giving personality."
DALE WE WILL ALWAYS REMEMBER YOU, GODS SPEED!
