The Republican talking point has been to repeal the health care reform bill no matter what. Recently, a newly elected Congressman was extremely mad when he learned that his government health care plan does not kick in until a month after he takes the oath of office. The freshman Congressman is a former doctor from the state of Maryland named Andy Harris. He will take the oath of office on January 3, 2011. However, his health insurance plan through the government does not take effect until the month of February.
It would seem that many people in the public would actually find this story very funny. This Republican Congressman is complaining that he will be without health care coverage for a month when he wants to prevent people who have not had coverage for months, years, or maybe ever from actually becoming insured. This man is a doctor and should understand how vital health insurance is and that is why he is so upset. One would think that he campaigned for health insurance coverage for everyone but they would be wrong.
During his Congressional campaign, Harris was very adamant and took an anti- health care reform stance and is now putting his hand out and wants the government to give him his health benefits early or allow him to purchase a plan in the interim. Republicans do not want to practice what they preach here and it is refreshing for one of their own to see the harsh realities that people face even if he does have a job and will get his health insurance benefits four weeks from his taking office.
