A Couple Simple Questions

Alright guys, I'll lay it out there I'm just getting into this - but I have obviously been doing research and there is an abundant amount of information. But I guess I wanted to go the forum route and clarify some information. My plant is in week 3 right now, no flowering has occured... And I can't determine the sex yet (I know what to look for atleast though - I think :blsmoke:)

Anyway, down to the nitty gritty.

Plant Specs:
Height - 3.75"
Time - 2.75 Weeks
Avg Temperature - 68-73 Degrees F
Lighting - 30Watt 12v concentrated on one small plant, I assume I'll have to upgrade when the time comes for it needing more light

Questions:

1.) How long should I keep my plant in the light, it's being grown in soil/peat moss combination with gravel at the bottom of the pot helping the drainage process...

I know during budding it's suggested 12/12... But how much should I have the light on the plant during the growing process

2.) Are my growing combinations ok.
Ex: Soil (No Fertilizer) 45% - Peat Moss (55%)

3.) How many weeks will it take before budding occurs?

Budding will occur when you change the light to 12/12. You wont be able to tell the sex until you flower. For now, keep her under 24/0 of light. So light all day if ya can. You want to keep her under 24/0 of light, until shes quite big. The longer you keep her under 24/0, the higher yield you will get when you harvest. So remember, changing the light to 12/12 will cause her to flower!

That should have answered everything.

my opinion,
your still in the veg. stage so ur lights shld b on 24hrs a day
an ur med. i tryed growing hydro. with rocs an peat moss an the peat moss did a bad job with draining. water flows but peat moss murdered my roots cuz it held to much water so i wld use less or mix good but how long b4 buding is all genitics an lighting ive started sum bag seed hydro. an it showed sex in about a month in a half to two so keep a eye on those lil nodes to determine sex an when to change the lighting to 12/12

IMO, don't use 24hr lighting unless you are using feminised seeds. The less light used during vegging the better your chances are at getting more female plants. 18 hours on and 6 hours off is ideal for non-feminised seeds while still ending up with large yields. This is why so many people who are using 24 hr light end up posting things in the forum like "FUCKING DAMN MALES" and "When will i get a female?" and "why do i get so many male plants". Its up to you but I would use 18/6.

Oh and when you switch to 12/12 is when you will start seeing signs of sex. Hope I've been of some help.

So 30 Watts, concentrated onto the plant is enough power as well. I also hooked up a small fan running low just to keep wind moving and make it sturdier long term. So generally speaking 18/6? Then after about how long should i switch to 12/12?? After 2 mo.

From my personal experience this isn't true. I always veg under 24hr lights using non-femmed and I get about a 60/40 F to M ratio. Sex is a genetic trait. Plants will hermie under stress, but 24 hr light isn't going to give her anxiety problems!

I'm so sick of arguing this point. LESS LIGHT PRODUCES MORE FEMALES! Sex is not entirely genetic! Can someone please put this info in the GrowFAQ where it belongs? What do I need to search for this info again to prove it one more time?

Fwiz, in my own personal experience I would use 18/6 for about the first month or month and a half depending on what growing methods used. If you are doing a small (space and yield) grow, switch on 12/12 right from the second or third week.

And for everyone who is wondering about amount of light changing the amount of males/females here is something for you:

This is an excerpt from Dutch Passions:

From literature and our own findings it appears that the growth of a male or female plant from seed, except for the predisposition in the gender chromosomes, also depends on various environmental factors. The environmental factors that influence gender are:

  • a higher nitrogen concentration will give more females.
  • a higher potassium concentration will give more males.
  • a higher humidity will give more females.
  • a lower temperature will give more females.
  • more blue light will give more females.
  • Fewer hours of light will give more females.

Plus my own personal ratio of 5-10% males in every grow, I'm pretty sure this is true.

Alright, I'll stick to 18/6. I'm easily convinced with just someone portraying some knowledge on the subject. This more importantly is a scientific experiment you should say, never have done it before, and am quite intrigued by it. I did a couple modifications to it as suggested - i put a fan on it to keep things going. But thanks for the suggestions. I'm about to rip up a fattttty now :joint: hopefully one day this lil one guy I'm growing will be able to supply the same joy lol

I have two 20 Watt Fluorescent bulbs on the plant, keeping air continuing to it. I made the mistake with starting to grow with a 40watt Halogen, so I replaced it with two 20watt. I'm growing one concentrated plant, Anymore suggestions?

I would say you need to grow a few more, because theres a chance your plant won't be female.

But other then that you're fine for now! :)

when will i know to start flowering, and also another question. because i was an idiot using a halogen to grow it for the first 2.5 weeks, is it going to be ok now that I've moved to Fluorescent lighting?
