Quick germination question

I'm germinating an LA Woman seed directly in FFOF. I have a CFL over the soil, to keep the temperature a bit warmer. Am I hurting my seed by having the light on all the time? I can't find my heating pad, and I'm afraid a dark drawer will be too cold. I have the unfortunate luck of having the first room off of the AC, so when the rest of the house is nice at 76, I'm at 72.

I get 100% germination from my seeds. I fill up a shot glass with room temperature water then drop the seeds in the water. I cover the shot glass with a mug or something that blocks out light. I let them soak for 24 hours and then remove seeds and place them in jiffy pellets. I place the jiffy pellet under 24 hour light and keep it moist. Give it a try and good luck

Seeds do not need light to germinate - nor is total darkness necessary. But as soon as the sprouts appear they DO need light.

So keeping them under a light for warmth isn't detrimental to the seed?

Another thing I'd like to know. I have my lowryder#2 germinating using the paper towel method. The seed has cracked, and I can see the tap root still inside the seed shell. It hasn't protruded past the seed shell yet and it's stayed like that for almost 36 hours now. It should still be good to go right, just maybe a bit slow?

Next time you should find a neutral soil to put a seed in. Ocean Forest is gonna burn those little girls up initially.

Last season I planted over two dozen seeds outside, they were bag-seed btw. Of those garbage seeds I had maybe one that didn't sprout.

I did the shot glass method, for about 24 hours. I only planted the ones that were able to take in water and actually dropped to the bottom. I always get them well before the break the shell, as I do not want to deal with a sensitive seedling that has sprouted already. So them sinking means they are ready IMO.

Then I planted them in small jiffy pots for easy transportability till they were ready to go into the soil (which was about when that 4th leaf set formed).

I did the same type of germination for my Nirvana NLs, and so far those are 2 for 2.

Recently though, someone has in their signature a good write up as to why it's actually better to avoid pre-germination methods and to plant them directly into the medium in which they will be growing..... made some good points.

ya know... I hear that A LOT, but at the same time I see tons of threads where people never have an issue. Is there anything in particular I can do with the FFOF to make sure I don't burn my babies? What is it that would burn up seedlings for some people, but be perfectly fine with others?

I read through something similar (might have been the same thread). After pondering the different germination methods (I have a lowryder#2 seed in paper towels right now haha) it seems pointless to mess with pre-germination. Mother nature doesn't have paper towels haha. The way I see it if a seed is too weak to germinate in soil (as long as I'm not the one killing it!) I don't want to grow it out. I want nothing but strong genetics since I'll be messing around with a lot of breeding.

I have had 100% success with the shot glass method, then in a small box on back of the tv for heat. Works great and havnt lost a seed yet!!! touch wood.
take it easy...

rockwool cubes work out great for germination...i go in the rockwool cube until i see the 2nd set of true leaves and then bury the cube into my FFOF and they take quite nicely....clean and efficient
