hey man what i meant by the yellowing leaves is as you get close to harvest and hopefully you have began your flush the plant will start yellowing her leaves. You dont want to pull them off unless they're crumbling and brown and basically just dangling. From what ive been told and someone correct me if im wrong is that the plant will yellow because its pulling its energy to the buds at the very end stages. and by energy i mean its sugars, left over nutes and all that other plant stuff. Ive been told this by several veterans. IMO i would leave them for the benefit of the plant and your benefit as you can use this as 1 of many indicators of ripeness. Hope this helps if any experts would like to chime in that have a better opinion on this i would like to hear it as well. I would go with at least 5 more days on that purple D its going to be a some pretty herb its looking mighty frosty

looking good, keep doing what you are doing, just make sure to ease up on the nitrogen

yeah, i'm flushing the purple d with just ph'ed water, and giving sour d a little dynagrow (3-12-6) for another few days until i start flushing her too.

thanks tokeandrelax, much appreciated. yeah, i'm only taking out leaves that snap off with a gentle bend, mostly so they don't cause shade. i've heard the energy redistribution thing, and that makes sense. and yeah, the purple d, i'm thinking another 3-7 days she'll be nice and ripe. as you can tell, the buds aren't huge (1-2 inches tall), but they are mighty frosty, and getting frostier

wait till a good amount of trichomes at least turn milky white before u harvest. before that, they are not ready. maybe wait till a few turn amber a little bit

Does anyone have experience, positive or negative, about decreasing the light-on time during the last week or two of a plant's life? Since we're sort of trying to imitate nature (like when we switch to 12/12 to signal the coming of autumn) it would follow that switching to something like 10/14 toward the end would help speed the plant up. But I haven't seen any evidence one way or the other... anyone know?

p.s. here's the state of my buds at 42 days from 12/12... I'll be setting up my dry box this week and posting pics

oh man i got all concerned when i saw the word energy, but i read his post and all is fine =D

Iam not going to say that you can't, in fact, even if it had no effect on the plant at all, you might save some $$ on electricity. From what i have read though, it wont do much to the plant.

quick update... here's stage 1 of my dry box. i'm going to place it in the closet facing away from the in-closet fan, and i'll make holes on the side walls of the box so some ventilation can get in without making the buds sway, and hopefully without letting too much light get in (since i'll probably be drying one plant while the other one finishes a week of blooming).




looks like chop day for purple diesel is coming up any day now. any opinions on done-ness? also, a lot of people say "chop before lights on"... what's the advantage of that? many thanks...

hey omertaitalia, yeah in an ideal world i would've let her go a little longer too. maybe my first-timer's instinct caught up with me . but also, just stealth related circumstances forced me to chop.

please feel free to comment. right now, purple d's branches are hanging in a box (smelling hayish), while sour d is still under the lights for another 3-4 more days before her harvest. i'm also drying all of purple d's trimmed sugar leaves in a box top, and i think those will be ready to cook with maybe tomorrow. let me know what you think!

also, anyone know about paper bag drying?

a dispensary guy who seems like he knows what he's talking about suggested i put the buds in a paper bag before i start the jar curing. this way the buds get some air flow and continue to dry a bit, before risking humidity and mold problems in a jar. so the idea was:

3-5 days hanging + 1-2 weeks in paper bag + curing in a jar (w/burping)

anyone try that with success/failure?

i put mine in a paper bag sometimes but just for 12 hours or 24 hours never weeks and thats after they are hung and dried 3-5 days.never had my buds smell like hay from that.

quick update, folks.

sour d is harvested, in a jar! got 1/2 oz dry with 75w, pretty pleased with that. here sum piks:




i think i might have over-dried just a tad? the branches were in the closet with indirect ventilation for 3.5 days, to the point where the buds felt crispy, but the stem didn't quite snap. but i guess "doesn't quite snap" is up to interpretation, but the stem sort of snaps, but doesn't fully break off -- the skin stays on. on the other hand, it might be perfect, i don't know the comparison point.

but it did seem purple d regained a bit of moisture after 10 days cure.

Looks as if it may of dried out to fast...Maybe too much air flow. In my experiance if overdried you will notice alot of brown pistils falling off in the jar and some of the sugar leaves may turn brownish.

yeah, i think you're right dankbudzzz. a few brown hairs are falling off when i transfer containers, but not too much. i think it'll still be alright... (i hope). do think it's worth trying to add moisture at this point? a light spray of water or something?
