HPS vs CFLs

i showed another fellow grower my setup which is a 400w hps. he tries telling me i could switch to CFLs and get just as much yield, less power consumption, and less heat. sure the power consumption and less heat would be true, but i had trouble not laughing at him about the yield. is there actually any truth to this or should i have probably laughed in his face? he told me its because the color spectrum is better in CFLs. maybe thats true also but i dont see how the fuck i could match my yield unless i had like a shitload of CFLs. CFLs just dont have nearly the light penetration that the HIDs do. hate to say it but seems to me like another inexperienced grower that doesnt really know wtf hes talking about. why the fuck would i want to downgrade?

HPS is not an "I WIN" button. ;)

There are many CFL growers that put 400w system growers to shame.
yeah but not everyone with a 400w system, as with any system, exactly knows what they're doing. show me proof of a nice yeild with CFLs. otherwise i win by default.

im not trying to knock CFLs, in fact they're great for starting clones. but compared to HIDs LOL. sounds like people who dont care enough about their passion to spend the extra $$$.

How about from the horses mouth.......I have 7x 250W HO CFL's in 27K and 65K and I can honestly say that i wish i rather had 2x 600W HID's. They simply don't have the penetration so I am now scrogging. I'm defenitly upgrading asap!!!!!!!!!!!!!

For any doubters out there, check my thread out, there are all the pics you need to see and I'll answer any question regarding them!

I don't see how penetration is the issue. With CFLs you can surround the plant and have the lights very close. With HID all the light disperses from one more distant source. Even if you placed the CFLs just as far, if you have 10,000 lumens of CFLs, they'll penetrate just as well as 10,000 lumens of HPS. There isn't some magical property to HPS that makes the same amount of light somehow lose less % of its light with distance compared to CFL or any other light for that matter... that would be against the laws of physics.
My assumption was HPS gives significantly better yield simply because it has significantly higher PAR per watt than CFLs do.

cfl's are great for quality and small grows
without heat issues or space no way your beating 400 hps

I've got both running...separately

I get 4 times the yield with HID (400 watt MH/HPS), compared to 315 watt CFL multi-spectrum

just my $ 0.02 :bigjoint:

I can only speak for me--but in the summer here I use cfl's because of the heat--in the fall -winter I use 400 mh and 400 hps--which makes enough heat to make things thrive
