after reading about starting a grow closet I go to my local hydro store and start pricing stuff....the only thing stopping me from buying a setup for closet was the hps light....Too Expensive..and after reading 100's of threads, Ive concluded your wasting your time without an hps light to bud with...anyway I tell the store owner this and he tells me he has some 150 watt hps bulbs that I can plug into a regular light socket....no ballast needed..I figure i'll buy two ($50) and put them into home depot cheapo round chrome light fixtures ($20 for two)....$70 total and I'm setup with hps....I also buy a complete hydro system..rock wool..three kinds of nutes...ph stuff...timers....I also ordered bubblicious seeds.....I'm all exited about my new project and get my closet all set up only to find that after plugging my hps lights in , I get nothing...G*d Da##it....Fu#@!!!! I was teetering on the fence about buying the hydro setup and the store owner getting me into decent lighting for cheap is what made me decide...go for it lets do this!!!! I'm so sick of people being so Fu##en full of $hit!!!:spew::evil:

not to be a dick, but if you'd done your homework, you would have noticed something was up the second he said it didn't require a ballast. A household socket simply does not have the power to run an HPS.

yeah I would take that shit back and tell him how fucked up that a experienced hydro store owner would tell you some bull shit like that

all the lights I have read about were 250 400 600 1000 watt.....
when the hydro store owner said he had 150 watt lights that would work I must have foolishy thought that I could believe that he wasnt full of $hit...being as he owned the store.... Ps why you gotta be a dick...just jokin:twisted::hump:

i got an HPS from home depot for about 50$ ,..the whole fixture ,, it looks liek a mini street light , its 70 watts ,, with that and 4 - 42 watt 2700k cfl ,, i will be all set for 1 plant LST style also ,, O YEAH ,, that 70 watt hps does work on a regular light socket ,, after reading these threads i went & screwed it into a regular socket ,, worked just fine .....left it on for about 10 mins

that's totally understandable. If you can't trust the store owner, who can you trust? Go give that douche a piece of your mind and get your money back. Tell him you did the rest of the community a favor by posting a link to his store and address so nobody makes the same mistake in the future.

sounds good ,, theyre in the security lighting section , or outdoor lighting .... u will have to wire it tho .. its easy ,, ok it come complete balast already attached ,, it has - white * neutral & black * hott - wires comming from inside of it .. buy a plug head from the hardware store 3$ ,, its just a 3 prong plug u stick in any *grounded * outlet,, unscrew it & make sure u read what terminal to hook the B & W wires to ,, then from the hardware store also get two 5 or 6 inch green ground wires the copper inside of that green ground wire whould be solid , not strands .. hook that ground from the plug head to the little green screw in the lamp & ull be in business ,,, OR u can just hook it into the light socket liek i meationed in my last thread ,, BUT, over time ,, im not so sure that would be such a good idea due to high heat from the hps lamp may melt the socket ,, even tho its 70 w ,, it still gets hot,, not 100% sure if it would melt it or not,, i did it for 10 mins just to see if it would work , it did & no damage ,...but i wouldnt recommend it

I am trying out a cpl of 50w Hps I nabbed from Home depot for 29.00 each. As money is TIGHT for me right now I had to buy them one at a time, LOL.

I will add this to your question (if you dont mind) how much power is needed for just oneplant?

Did you leave it on for a while or did you just turn it on and when it didn't light, turn it off again? I know when I first got my 600w it took a little while before it came on. It wasn't instantaneous like I was used to with incandescent.

I left in on for about 1 minute and nothing.....It did cross my mind that maybe it would take a bit to light...after 1 minute the fillament wasnt even slightly glowing...nada.... xbravoz sat staring out the window as the rain poored...a tear dripped onto his empty hydro system....LOL

the light didnt come on after 1 minute ,,, did u check it for a *photocell* its a lil censor that automatically turns on the light when its dark ,,,,, if there is light on ,,, it will not turn on teh light until its dark ,,, thats what is on the light i got from HD ,, a mini street light , and right on teh top of it is a photocell ,, , so i just cut out a circle piece of cardboard & put that over that cell ,, & then electrical taped it into place & then covered all that with ductape & now its good :)..... yeah them ceramic sockets wont melt :)
