Growing without a timer?

I havent used a timer at all so far and i am ab out 6 weeks in, 4 weeks in veg, now 2nd week flower. I was on 24 hrs for veg but now since i am in flowering i am 12/12. I have the lights on 7am-7pm daily, then off 7pm-7am daily but without a timer. I have always made sure to turn on/ off within a 2 min timeframe since i have 3 alarms to tell me too, so is this ok? I know timers are cheap but i dont trust them for some reason, since my friend had some issues with them. thanks in advance. REPS to anyone who gives feedback. thanks. NEWBIE GROWER.
 
I was on the same light schduel for flower and it sucked when I wanted to sleep in on the weekends. I figured out my timer and would never go back. Get a timer and test multiple times. Even get up for the first couple days that you have it plugged into yur light just to make sure it works. I sucks to have to be tied down or have to be back at home at a certain time.
 
Ok, thanks for the advice. I will get some timers, I have NEVER been more than 5 minutes off either way, will the plants notice that little bit? I dont leave the house for anything since i work from home, and watch my 2 girls at home once they are out of school. So, being here is not the problem. Although i will go get a timer, just want to know if i am ok as of now? thanks.

get a good timer though not 9.99 spend around 30 to 50 and get a heavy duty timer that way you know it will work a good timer will keep lights on a thight sched then u will have a nicder harvest

I apologize for not posting this clear, I am very aware that i need a timer, my question still remains? I have been NO MORE than 2-5 minutes off on switching the lights on or off, am i ok so far? Meaning, you dont think the pl;ants could have known that little time and are hermies now do you? THANK YOU ALL... + REPS TO ALL

Ive grown indoors for 6 years straight without a timer. A 4k watt setup with 52 plants. Im off by minutes ALL THE TIME, even half-hours. My dank still fetches the highest prices in ANY dispensary.
 
if just a few minutes here and there i would say u are alright
but a timer helps when u got places to go and wont be home
otherwise it makes u feel like u r on house arrest lol
 
I've got a serious boner for timers. timers on the lights, timers on the fans, timers on the pumps, timers on humidifier, timers on co2 tank, timers on the aircon. Shit man, I need a timer to keep track of my timers. But then again, I am one of those people that likes to leave the house.

Seriously though, this isn't the stone age, automate that shit. I could fly to Hawaii for a week and my plants would never know the diff. In fact, I'm going to do that this January :)
 
WHEW, thanks alot for that, what a relief to hear that. I didnt think plants were smart enough to know if i was off by a few minutes. What, are they going to tell me, " HEY you were 4 minutes late with shutting out the lights dad, fuck off, im going hermie on you" LOL.... thanks alot for the help bud, its appreciated. REPS..

Cool, glad to hear. I hear you on the timer for not being stuck in the house. As much as i love this hobby, i do feel like i am stuck here 24/7 and go nuts at times.- I actually work from home too so i pretty much on house arrest, only difference the cops wont show up if i try to leave.THANK GOD..... I am going to look at timers tomorrow then, need to find a good one...

HAHHAHA, that was hilarious man, HAHHAHA, Hawaii, lucky bastard, NICE brotha. I need to get my room dialed in with a few things still, timers included. I guess just chalk it up as a 1st grow newbie. It seems like i never leave the house, well because i dont being that i work from home anyway. Off to shop for timers tomorrow then, just need to let my trust issues go when i comes to them. Check this...

To me, It seems like the timer thing is like trying to rely on your chick to take care of the plants when you hit Vegas for 3 days. I came back and my shit was looking sad, luckily i got back to save em, poor ladies. Last time that happens..

You're fine so far. A little varience of only a few minutes is probably not going to affect your plants. However, if you're serious about growing, it's great to get a timer because they are mechanical and will do work for you, and will be more precise than even the most careful person. However, if you're worried about your timer's reliability, then you can take a few steps to ensure that it's always working. First, make sure to get a quality timer and plug it into an outlet that you trust. I recommend getting a digital timer because they are harder to mess up when you're programming then, since they display the time right on the screen. Second, you can still check on your plants every day to make sure everything's working okay and the lights are going on and off as planned. It's a good idea to check on your plants daily anyway, so you can plan to check on then right after or right before the lights change.

If you talk to your friends who had problems with their timer, it was probably because of one of these things: their old crappy timer broke, they didn't program the timer properly, or they used a bad outlet (or an outlet that can be turned off with a switch). In any case, if they had been checking on their plants dailey, they wouldn't have had problems with their plants. It's almost always okay if something goes wrong with the lights for one or two days. Your plants won't even react. You end up getting problems when the plants aren't getting a consistent light schedule over time.

a few minutes here and there - nothing to worry about. even an hour i'd say you'd be fine. the problem is when it becomes a consistent problem. Get a TIMER not because you haven't but because you MIGHT one day not be there and a few hours would stress the shit out of the plants. On top of that, once you get it you won't have to be around and such. it'll make your life 1000x better. Everyone else uses timers - you should too.
 
I would suggest a mechanical timer and not a digital one. Less things to go wrong as their is no cirrcuit board, just a little motor and a mechanical switch. I've used a $15 mechanical timer for 5 years without a problem Honestly, your ballast and other electronics are more apt to failure than a mech timer
 
What a stupid thread - I DON´T HAVE A TIMER !!!! Go and freaking buy one!! Cost a couple of bucks for a simple one that does the job.
 
When you grow up you may find it possible to disagree with people without hurling childish abuse.


There is quite obviously only one unhappy person around here, LOL.
