The 600w is the MOST effecient HID available.
It also has the highest Lumen Per Watt (LPW) conversion.
Lumens = Light = Par = Buds
The closer the plants to the light source the better it grows b/c it gets more PAR light/watts.
Not too close obviously.
2 - 600w will give more and better light coverage because the light is coming from 2 points.
You can get the lights closer to the canopy AND not have to deal with the 1K heat too !
Because you can easily get 6 inches closer w/ a 600w, it can hit with as much light as a 1K.
Inverse Square Law.

Rep added man...jorge cervantes couldnt put it clearer haha.
Ive only grown with a single 600w. After the first month of use my bill went up 40$... I was going to buy a 1000w MH when I started, but I read one of jorge's books wich stated the inverse square law. Im happy with a 600w, and the digital ballast. The old style are really heavy, loud, and hot... my digital ballast put out allmost no heat or noise. Whats up with the room you plan to grow in? if you dont mind me asking.

I believe it is 10 by 10 and I was going to change from a 100o over a 4x4 to 2 600 over a 4x8 table to yield at least 4 2 5 pounds or at least get close to it

more light = more bud. if you only gonna run 2 lights they might as well be 1000 watt hps. if you wanted to run a bunch i would prolly get 600s. my two cents.
