Who knows? Maybe in the future they have the ability to travel through time, but realize what a "metaphysical can of worms" (to quote Adaptation) it could wind up being, and put restrictions on it. I'm all preaching is: Who knows? No one really knows anything in this world.

Steven Hawking says it can happen - but not like you think.
He says that you cant go back in time - too many paradoxes. Like if you killed your past self with your future self - there would be no future self to travel through time to kill yourself.
He does say time travel to the future is possible; but you wouldnt be able to "come back" like in Back to the Future. Basically as you approach the speed of light time slows - same with gravity. If you could orbit around a black hole for 100 years you may age say 10 years. You now fly back to earth an it is 100 years from when you left but you are only 10 years older.

Time is a unit of measurement of the 4th dimension, just as a foot or a meter is a unit of measurement in the other 3 dimensions in which we exist. Time existed before we had a name for it, much like everything else in this universe. It is postulated there are 11 different dimensions, including the 4 we occupy. Our plane of existance is a very limited representation of all that is out there.

I would categorize time travel and other dimensional travel in the same bracket.
Nice thought but that's all they are, mans thoughts.
