pest control

I have a sprayer I recently purchased at Menards. Its a one gallon plastic sprayer. They have several, I bought the one thats about $8.00. In it I put one tablespoon of Neem Oil,costs about $20.00 for 8oz of pure neem, one tablespoon of liquid dish soap, about $2.00, and one gallon of water. Shake the shit out of it , pump it up and spray. Pay particular attention to the bottom of the leaves, this is where a lot of pests hide. Done once a week for preventive maintanance. To get rid of an infestation do it twice a week for two weeks, then the preventive cycle.
If you are in it for the long haul the investment is worth it. Do not use that sprayer for anything else. Its safe, neem oil is a plant derivative, and dish soap won't hurt you or your plants, its also a rule to mark insecticides.
If you are tight right now, go get any insecticide that says it kills what you think you have that contains Neem Oil, about $8.00, comes in a marked spray bottle, which you could reuse. VV

How much longer until they are ready? I am assuming only a couple weeks, in which case you don't want to use neem oil as it will impart a taste on the buds.
If you only saw the one and failed to find anymore you might be lucky enough not to encounter anymore problems, just keep looking out for them. The best control methods are probably the biological ones; Bacillus thuringiensis, Spinosad and trichogramma which could all be used in conjunction with each other. I would suggest researching those.

Sprinkling cinnamon around the plants may also help deter these insects.

yeah not to much longer till harvest time i think, this will be my first harvest, but i believe this was an isolated incident and not an infestation. i did have white flys earlier in the year and some silly little green flying fella's but the neem oil took care of them for the most-part. but current situation I did spray the area and natural foliage with neem oil and i sprinkled cinnamon and red pepper around the area and went through the buds with a magnafying glass and tweezers to make sure they where safe.

Organocide is a good product also. The problem with those kinds of pesticides (Neem, Organocide, Pyrethrin/permethrin) is that they will kill everything including spiders, bees, lady bugs and others that prey on detrimental insects. Neem is also a fungicide and doesn't discriminate against beneficial fungus either. After it wears off, the plants could be even more prone to re-infestation as there is now no competition.

For these reasons I highly recommend using biological controls, including predator bugs; only using other methods if the bio controls have failed and there is a serious infestation.

all my beneficial fungi and bacteria are in the soil; not the plants. Neem oil does work fine for my small organic indoor grow as it keeps pests and mildew away.
Bringing in other predatory pests is just not an option for some of us small-scale homegrowers.

I am a small scale home grower, and biological controls are not limited to bugs that eat other bugs nor are pests always found on the plants themselves. Soil dwelling pests like fungus gnats also suck and they lay eggs directly in the soil. If you were to neem-drench your living organic soil in an attempt to get rid of the eggs, larvae and adults; you would be affecting a lot more than just the gnats. In my soil (indoors) besides symbiotic fungi, I have seen predatory mites and springtails, and have no problem with them contributing to the soil food web. The predator mites eat various pests including gnat larvae, and populations are reduced where these mites are present. To further reduce the gnat populations I have been using bacillus thuringiensis israelensis (mosquito dunks), a bacterium that is consumed by the larvae and produces a toxin that kills them. I could also get some beneficial nematodes to seek and destroy, and all would of these controls would co-exist just fine.

I will always use the Bti as a preventative even if I don't see any gnats, along with Diatomaceous earth dusted into the carpet and within any crevices to kill any gnats or others pests that come into contact with it. But there are plenty of invisible, non-crawling biological controls (bacterial or fungal) that prevent insects and pathogenic fungi such as fusarium and powdery mildew. I do use neem, organocide and pyrethrin on occasion or when necessary, but never as a soil drench indoors. I am hesitant to use any of them outdoors.
