wow, glad i started this thread. lmao...thanks for all the input guys, im pretty sure the seeds i got were pretty fucking old to begin with.
Im also glad to hear that a lot of you dont like the paper towel method. I was kind of skeptical about that myself, this is the first time ive ever grown anything and i never heard of doing such a thing with any kind of seed.
I have had 8 more seeds germinating in a paper towel for about 20 hours now and 4 of them are showing root so im getting ready to plant them.
I also just ordered some white widow seeds and i think when i get those im just going to plant them directly in the soil like SS says, because he seems to be a pretty knowledgeable guy...
and no fabfun you guys didnt run me up a hill with the arguing, lol...i had some shit to do then my wife wanted to play pool so i just got a chance to get on here...
Thanks agian for all the input guys
Thank you for coming back and i wish you the best of luck with everything.
SS.

In nature they rot if they fall into a puddle of water...and there are no paper tissues lying around either. Taking into account these botanical facts, it is quite logical that by creating germination conditions that are similar to those of the natural habitat one can expect the best results.
I have never soaked seeds or had any kind of fungus but it tells you in the "starting your seeds" thread what happens when you soak seeds or use towels.
Ok, I read that article. It assumes way too much to really be helpful. It's true that in nature, seeds that fall into a puddle will eventually rot. However, it has been PROVEN by many grows here that a presoak of the seed (about 12 hours) will greatly increase the chances of the seed to germinate. Obviously if you leave the seed in the cup for days, it will begin to rot because the seed has long since cracked, allowing water to get inside. This is why you only keep the seed submerged for 12 hours or until it sinks (seed has cracked).

The article says that germinating directly in soil (simulating what happens in the natural habitat) garners the best results. I beg to differ. While it may offer consistent results with nature, surely there are better ways to get higher germination rates. In nature, do you think every seed that lands in the soil sprouts, and grows into its designated plant? No. What we are trying to do here, in our grows, is get the best germination rates possible as seeds are expensive (if you buy). Using tried and true pre-germination methods, we have greatly increased the odds that our seeds will germinate and sprout.

I dont know why you're still fighting on this. You can germinate seeds your way. I can germinate seeds my way. In the end, we're all trying to help each other achieve successful grows. No need to talk down to a germination method which you have never tried because you think your way is superior. We are here to give ideas to someone that is having difficulty germinating.

If you want to discuss this further, PM me, and stop cluttering up this thread.

Yes i totally agree as everyone has their own methods and opinions and thats fine as thats why we are here to discuss the methods used by others including myself.
There is no need for any arguments as everyone has their own way to do things and thats a good thing to see how different growers do things.

cool so it seems 4 out of the 20 is myth busted
so why dont u if u have more seeds try a side by side straight to soil and in the shot glass of water method and than let us know what u found?

I don't bother with paper towels and all that other man made stuff. I do it natures way! :)

I take a plastic man made 9 oz solo cup (nature needs a little help) and lightly fill it with organic seed starting mix. I don't press down or compact, just tap cup on hard surface to level. I have already used my Fiskar trimmers to punch small holes in the bottom of the cups. I do one cup per seed, and then pour about 3 oz of ph balanced water in each cup. I then make a 1/4" hole and place the seed in and lightly cover it. I place the cups together in a small tray and I cover them with a Glad OvenWare black tray. The tray keeps in moisture and blocks light. Mist twice a day, in 2-3 days, I usually have 100% germination. I remove cups as the cotyledons appear and place them under 6500k cool white plus flouros and go from there......

The babies in the pic are just beginning to ask for food. They are now on very light nutes and some superthrive... (a few drops will do ya! :) :)

ok so what EXACTLY is this seed in a cup of water, 12 hour, pop, sink...whatever the fuck it is...what is that way to germinate?...and fabfun, i might try that

oh and i agree with you guys about doing it natures way, but i also agree that im planting these seeds for a reason and i want to make sure i get it started off right
Im a firm believer in practice makes perfect so im not all that upset about what happend, especially cause i have more seeds that are ready to go.
But i will def. try all the diffrent ways to get my seeds to sprout and whatever way works best, im sticking to it...just like everyone else...
but thanks agian, all you guys...for all your input

serapis thanks for reminding this method only works with swag seed they did a scientific study here recently on my front porch and they found pricey seeds thought this cheapened them so they wouldnt participate

I place my seeds in a shot glass filled with room temp distilled water. They will float. When they crack/sink (about 12 hours) I drain the water, and CAREFULLY transfer them to a room temp moist paper towel. The moist paper towel is placed in a small cup (~8oz) with an 1/8th inch of water in the bottom. This cup is placed in a warm, humid area (my attic). After 24 hours, you will see a 1/4 inch taproot. Using tweezers, carefully transfer seed to moist soil. Make a hole deep enough so that the seed sits 1/4 inch below the surface and also deep enough so that the taproot doesnt hit any soil. Cover it up, and water thoroughly. Put a light over it.

u get a small glass shot glass size and throw seeds in then put in the darkness and i do this by covering glass then putting in a dark place
then 24 hours later the ones that split r on bottom and trash seeds r still floating and u throw them off your front porch over your right shoulder as u say a prayer that one will grow

You're correct and I left that part out. You want to keep your cups in a warm, dark, and humid environment for the duration of the pre-germination. When you plant in soil then you can place it in your regular grow area with light.
