Iv been a lurker here for many a years. You guys have helped me learn to grow, and I have been successful in doing so a couple of times with hardly any problems. This grow I am very confused and torn between different setups and methods, I have done alot of research but just cant make up my mind.
The crawlspace I am working with is under the house, it have a cement floor and the ceiling is insulation and wooden support beams, there is also duct work that runs throughout. The biggest factor in this grow is the height of the space only being 3.5ft tall, with the duct work even lower, so in either space where ducting isnt present I have a 9x9 room and a 11x20 room each 3.5ft tall. Keep in mind im not trying to use all of this space obviously I have to have paths though this to tend my garden and I may just start out small to see how things work.
I was thinking of having florescents for the 9x9 for mothers and clones with white painted walls, poly over the ceiling and floor, and appropriate ventilation. For the bigger room I would really like to have HPS's in there. Now I have 2 150w hps horizontal security lights that I paid $50 for both, they get hot but with a fan on them there fine an have used them successfully before. I thought that would be a good idea to get a bunch of those to use, it turns out, I got a good ebay deal on those an there around 70 bucks a piece now, as is 150w htg supply light that I would just buy instead. If I got a bigger light in there I would want to mybe put sheet metal on the ceiling to prevent a fire, install smoke detectors, paint walls white, ventilation, and line with poly.
My questions are can I go bigger in the HPS department, should I look into an all floro grow? Hydro or soil, I only want hydro if I can make the system myself. Hydro would be better, but if I can keep the plants lower to the ground soil is great too and would save alot of extra work. Should I LST or SOG?

Really just tell me what you would do in this situation. Any and all advice is greatly appreciated. I have the Greenhouse Indica pak H fem seeds including Great White Shark, White Widow, Lemon Skunk, Train Wreck, and Cheese. Also they sent me one Kannabia BCN Diesel seed.

Peace, Love, and the Kindest Dank

I'd find myself some good clones from a mother, get their roots established, and launch them straight into flowering. I would definitely try the SOG method myself, making a bunch of plant with 2 or 3 buds a plant.

There's probably a better way, but I think that's viable.

Never had to adapt to that kinda situation so it'll be interesting to see what happens. Keep a log. =]]

Yea the SOG method seems like an easy way to go. Yes I would def put straight into flower as im super worried about height. My biggest worries are about the lights and weather to go hydro or soil. The rest is simple. For ventilation I was going to have it takin from a cold air return pipe so it takes air from inside my house and have it either scrubbed and returned to the house or scrubbed an put outside though a air vent already in the crawlspace. I have a tobacco smoker in the house will that negatively effect the plants?

Your plants might get cancer. I dont know really. Maybe tobacco smoke is good for pest control. I think it would affect the taste of the bud.

SOG or SCROG would be your best bet. With a 3.5' height you might get 2.5' of grow space. Might also consider CFLs.
I never really knew the diffrence between the two, if scrog would work that would be nicer to have to take less clones an a lesser amount of plants are growing at once, but wouldn't that also mean a bigger root system therefor a bigger pot, meaning it will also take more of my limited height. Im going to have 6 mothers how big should they get before I take clones, how many would I get and, how often do you take them?

There not a heavy smoker so I don't see it affecting taste. I just no these plants are susceptible to Tobacco mosaic virus. I thought inside air would be good for the plants due to the build up of C02, and I thought it would be nice to have the plants turn some to oxygen and return the air into my home.
