A small dense bud can have just as much or more surface area as a bigger fluffy one, it's just in more compact layers. As each new calyx piles onto your plants, don't they each have their own bed of resin? It doesn't go anywhere as new layers grow over it, it's still in there when you peel the layers away to smoke it later.
It seems that the poll should have been "Who prefers not to grind their stuff before they smoke it?". I'm almost exclusively a joint smoker, and I'm not about to just roll a paper around a bud and lick it, fluffy or dense. The dense one would be like trying to smoke an acorn and the fluffy one would probably tear my throat out. De-stem it and grind it up nicely first and it will burn like a cigarette.
You're pretty stuck on something that is just a personal, somewhat underdog, opinion. It's also pretty strain dependent. [/QUOTE]
surface area is bullshit. the flame burns into the nug not just the surface. the surface area thing makes no sense. good stuff all up in a bud all day not just the outside. joints get grinders for the sake of the paper-but not bowls
