heres a link to the thread i made when i was having problems. tons of good info/links in there.
oh, and heisnberg, wasnt trying to sound cocky, or like im trying to be and expert. im just an avvid reader/researcher lol
No worries, I never have a problem with expression.

I suppose the angle I was coming from was, seeing medicalpatient struggle with the question of, is h202 ok, is bleach ok, having a product made for hydro might remove some of the worry. And seeing that he stocked up on peroxide, Zone might be cheaper too. My bottle was $16 and has made hundreds of gallons. Then again, I suppose the same could be said for buying higher grade h202 and diluting it. I personally have used peroxide and bleach in the past, so I know both are safe with the correct application.

So tell me your experience, Heisenberg. Particularly with h2o2 and bleach. What was the situation, what amount did you use, and were you successful. Which did you prefer?

I had a slightly different problem. Brown slimy roots but not caused by pythium. I have not used food grade h202, but store bought h2o2 is safe enough that I have sprayed it directly on my roots with no problems. It does a good job of foaming the dead stuff away visually improving the roots almost on contact. I always felt that it killed a lot of the stuff on the roots, but it was never long, sometimes only a few hours, before the problem came back if I used h202 alone. I've added it to the res water, as much as 1 bottle per 3 gallons, with no obvious stress to the plants, but it still didn't keep slime from taking over the root zone.

I once soaked the roots in a 10:1 mix of bleach for 24 hours. I have no idea how that ratio compares to the recommended dosages, but it didn't stress my plants. The roots fizzed and the stuff around them died. I rinsed them and put them into a fresh res and all seemed well for a few days, but eventually the slime came back. Same thing with Physan 20; it does a great job of killing whats there but unless you run it all the time, the slime comes back. I once ran Dm zone + h2o2 + Sm90 and still had slime take over, even with low res temps and high dissolved oxygen. So I would not reccomend any of those products for the problem I had, but for run of the mill root rot they work well.

I was just thinking that DM Zone does a great job of keeping away root rot and also killing bugs and worms in the res, while at the same time being very economical and simple to use, without having to wonder if it's safe for the plants. I suppose that sounds as if i am implying that bleach isn't safe, but that isn't my intention.

I had to switch to using beneficial microbes in my res to fight off the slime problem. I am now hoping I never see any sort of worms in there, as Id have to sterilize them and kill off my micro army in the process, giving the slime a chance to come back.

Bloom is barely holding it's own. Infection has spread to my veg. Now it's all out war. All of my reservoirs are running 8 drops per gal. of Clorox. I used to spend a lot of time working in and around hospital operating rooms. I can tell you, none are as sterile as my grow area. Still, tomorrow the whole works gets another scrubbing.

Scary. Grow shop where I buy my nutes....people in there regularly mix chemical nutrients and organic supplements. Even today when I went up to get some more nutes and a replacement pump for my cloner, the lady in there directed to an organic "cure". She looked at me curiously when I held up the jug of chemical nutes and told her that would defeat the purpose. Though she had heard of using h2o2, she couldn't believe that I was using bleach on a live plant to eradicate pthyum.

well if you are using a sterilizing product and are still having problems there is something causing it continueusly. must be water temps, or bacteria thats stuck in the roots, getting pumped back into the water each time you scrub, or light leaks.

and one thing i can tell you about hydro shops, the owners/clerks most the time are complete novice, and dont know much about products they dont carry. dont get me wrong, sometimes you'll run into a knowlegeable person.
and also about her never hearing of bleach, its probly because she was only taught about the products they carry and sell.
hydro shops = cool brand names/jacked up prices... lol
