How close can you keep HPS/MH bulbs to your plants?

I have a question for people who grows with MH/HPS lights. I'm considoring of buying one of those but first i'm buying anything I want to make sure will i have space that is needed for each bulb.

how close its recomended to keep a 150, 250, 400, 600 and 1000w light bulbs to a plants?

Just curious to know what all the numbers inside the chart mean?

I want to say it represents Lumens but if you look at the MH chart under the 400 watt column it say's the bulb is 36,000 Lumens, then the first box at the 3" mark say's 183,346. What does that mean?

You don't really need a chart for cfl's. I use cfl's in my veg room and I keep them just a cpl of inches away from the tops with no problems.

I have a simillar question, but i want to have an MH and an HPS in one cabinet together to get the benefit of both red and blue spectrums throughout the grow, as i've been told this makes some really potent chronic..
SO I got a 150w HPS bulb and a 175w MH bulb. What I need to know now, is how close can i safely place these together?.. My cabinet is 23 inches deep, by 30 inches wide.. I was going to rig up my own reflector out of a mailbox, its big enough that i can comfortably place two mogul sockets in it.. but i don't want either of these lights to explode... IS there a risk or can they operate side by side no problem?..
