it's a common theme on the internet as a whole
when i was getting into computers, unix specifically, there was a common saying, RTFM (read the fucking manual!), if you did in fact rtfm, you did in fact search a few other places and actually MAKE AN EFFORT TO FIGURE IT OUT ON YOUR OWN, THEN and only then you were allowed to go ask the older guru unix guys questions in their irc channels and boards
if you came in there asking stupid questions without attempting to research first, you'd get a lot of stupid answers back and get ridiculed and laughed out of the forum/channel
it was generally very obvious when a newb that had done some research and actually tried came into the channel, versus a newb that didn't and basically wanted us to magically make everything work for them without them having to put forth any effort, the latter newb never becomes a real unix guy, the former most often did
