To Top, Or Not Too Top. That Is The ?

And got the cuttings taken a few days ago moved from the cups of water into rooters under the dome.journal 060.jpgjournal 065.jpgAnd come across a Cole Train cutting that made me grin.journal 058.jpg We get stressed out and forget about the fun of growing. And I wonder why we do. Look at this little one. An annual, weed, herb, drug or whatever you want to call it. Just chillin. Up, down, this way or that. Its all good.........

A week later I finally followed the advice of others. I transplanted our starter plant, the first subject in this thread, from 16oz to about a 35oz container. It may not be the perfect test subject. Go figure. Plants are fickle. It looks like one branch is going grow single. And the otherside is going to grow two tops. journal 073.jpg

First I would like to wish everyone a safe and happy Memorial Day. Especially the Veterans, Servicemen and Servicewomen around world. A very special thanks for your commitment, sacrifice and heroic efforts that allow us the freedoms we have.
To the journal. The clones taken a last week have held thier own for the last few days. So hopefully we will actually have some rooted plants to put in the dirt and get this show on the road. At least a couple of strains to start with. journal 099.jpgjournal 097.jpg

Here are also some pics of the grandmothers some of our strains came from. One I think Ben will appreciate. One thing we both agree on. Keep em green till the end. Gotta tell ya, bit of an 'urban legend' that certain plants naturally begin to die at the end of flowering /fruiting. journal 086.jpgjournal 089.jpgjournal 087.jpgjournal 080.jpg

Welcome aboard. But no arguments here, with anyone. And thats quite a mix. How does it smoke?

Everybody I just hope to present strong enough results to narrow the space between the guidelines growers choose to follow. Nothing more. Nothing less.

they were all fantastic smokes individualy, i have yet to sample them all together in one plant. they're a little older than a month, just transplanted from 12oz cups to 1.5 gal pots. so i should see some size out of em within a week or 2. i may take some clones and throw em outside, not sure yet.
thats the beauty of growing, theres just soooo many different techniques.

Borring thread so for I know. But figured I would update anyways. The 'Dirty Dozen' were cut to 9 today. Had one unknown clone that was lost in the mix. Turned out to be a Querkle. And the other 2 where a White Russian and a Snow White. New strains for me and looked like good genes to start with. Still have one of each in the mix. Less the Querkle. The last 4 finally got topped a few days ago. So I am making a cover for them this afternoon. And outdoor 12/12 starts tomorrow.journal 101.jpg Still havent seen any roots pop out of the clones yet. But looking fine. Maybe by the end of the weekend we will have some in the dirt. And stay tuned. I am going to post this evening a multi generational/style post of the Orange Bud.

The Cole Train met its final end yesterday. Cuttings in the cup overnight. Put them in peat pellets, my prefered medium for clones. For me it feels and works more like real soil. The first round as you know where put in rapid rooters. I have only used them a few times. Peat pellets still on top. journal 105.jpgjournal 107.jpg All the clones togetherjournal 109.jpgIn the white crate, 4 on the lower left are Cole Train, 6 above that are Deisel, 6 to the right of those are Orange Bud. The first round of cuttings. The 2 just below the OB clones are the tops from the same clan. More later on them. The lonely one is the top from our Sharksbreath. Looks like it will make it. But slow to get going so we will see. And figured I better post a pic of the plant that started this thread. Even though it did not pan out to what I thought it would. It still has a chance.journal 111.jpgjournal 112.jpgjournal 110.jpg

Enter the Orange Bud. As I said earlier, one of my personal favorites. And this plant has been around for just over 4 years now. All of the OBs in this thread are the result of one seed. Germed a few of them and for me this was the standout. And still lives today. Its not a one hit wonder or dank by todays standards. Just an 'Old School buzz'. Reminds alot of the off shoot Panama Red of the late '70s. Anyways its a staple in my garden and will be a staple in our little journey. Top right is the donor about 6 weeks in. The other 3 where taken at the same time. Middle was put in the flower room about 3 weeks ago. On the left in the bucket, the last to be transplanted from 2 qt. pots just afew days ago. Yes a 2 qt. pot carried her nicely. And bottom center the LST turned Supercrop hybrid. The Supercrop and bucket plant are the donors from which the tops and clones were taken. The next pic is just the clones. They get a bit greener as they get older/potted up huh? And they say yellowing and dieing are natural later in flower. Thats one I will never buy. The last is of the top of the first donor. One fat nug if I do say so myself.:hump:journal 113.jpgjournal 118.jpgjournal 114.jpg

man, it almost seems like you're entire backyard is a grow haha, that is amazing!. i wish i owned my own home :-( any tips for outdoor growing? i'm interested in knowing your thoughts on the lst grow, i tried my 2nd grow with lst and the buds were more consistent, and the plant seemed to thrive better :-). it takes control to another level, making growing just a little more interactive with the plant. i dont know about you guys but i enjoy looking at my ladies :-)

Almost seems like it. But I actually only flower 5 or 6 plants at a time. And stagger them a bit. I do start a ton of clones though. Trying different things and feeding programs. I am more interested in how fast and strong can I start them. So only about 8 of 10 starts actually make it to the point of possibly being flowered (actually going from a dixie to 2 qt. pot) The rest get dumped on the compost pile. Then even they all do not make it any farther than the 2 qt.
As far as outside growing. I am more of a 'set it and forget' outdoor grower. I can tell you stay away from any ferts that are animal based. Bonemeal, bloodmeal, fish emulsions. Use these and you will have critters digging your shit up. If it stinks to you then it smells like roses to critters. I use Osmocote. I mix some in when planting outside. And a month or so later top dress around the plants that have made it so far. Thats it until harvest.
And I guess you have already figured out that I agree about being interactive with your plants. Its the best I know to become a better grower. Of any plant.

dropping knowledge like bombs ova here!! haha, thanks man. i read somewhere else that meal attracts critters so im gonna stay away from them. i think my mix is gonna be blak cow pottin soil, fox farm blue bag, perlite, hydroton rocks, dolomite lime, earthworm castings ( thus far, thats it). anything else you would suggest? im going to dig 3gal sized holes all over and ammend the ground before planting. that way i have a good base to start from.

I dont know that I would bother with the hydroton. Its hard to use too many worm castings. Up to 40%. And when you plant them outdoors. Be sure to camo the perlite a bit. Those little white dots tend attract things. You want them to blend in as much as possible. Especially the first few weeks.

Thanks for the link cowboy. Just read through and subscribed. I appreciate you doing all the research i want to do but need my clones to go into flowering so i def don't top them. Been dabbling with supercropping for a while now and have it down to where i can almost just bend her over and give it to her. Um......i mean gently just pinch and twist. The top doesn't fall over to a 90 degree, just kind of leans. But still power branches the lower ones. Then it stands back up and hardly shows any stressing. Again thats the thing. I haven't done a side by side.

Whats your preferred method thus far? I'm all hydro so if you got any experiments I can facilitate let me know.

Gotta it covered Skunk. The Orange Bud in the orange bucket above will be Supercropped. Decided on that just today. I should have that post up tomorrow evening. Edit: True Supercropping means, in most cases, bending past 90. Look at the Orange Bud that I LSTed. Accidently Supercropped the top portion. I will post a pic of how it has healed.
