Smell with filter & fan running

Hi all. Wasnt sure wether to post this here or the diy section. Hope its ok in here.

This is my first grow, i have a CAN-carbon filter and rvk 100 running in my setup. I extract my 'dirty' air from my growroom/cupboard into my bedroom through the wall. One plant is at 7weeks flowering and have another sativa that still has a bit to go.
Even with my filter n fan setup, im still getting a smell in my bedroom, its not teribbly bad, if for whatever reason sumone got into my berdroom, i could prob pass it off as just after having a joint. But id like to get rid off the smell like 100% or as close to as possible.

Iv came to the conclusion that its my extractor fan thats too powerfull for my tiny dr60 tent, i was about to buy a fan speed controller but the place that sells them says they are quite tricky to wire up and im no electrician...... id rather have a bit of a smell leak than a fire.

For now iv been placing tumble dryer sheets in the hole and around the room. They do work well though but im starting to get fed up replacing them every 2nd day or so.
So im wondering, is it possible to add more carbon inside my filter, like some activated carbon inside some filter pad type stuff, {like the stuff people use when doing diy carbon filters} or again like a small pouch of the stuff sitting in a little pouch inside my the extraction hole on the wall where the air is coming out of? Or sumthin like along those lines ? Just basically getting more carbon sumwhere so the air has more to pass through.

iv seen some ingenius ideas people have came up with to help grow there favourite herb and im sure there will be sumthin i can do. Wheree theres a will there usually is a way.
Anyone know if this would work or have any ideas ?

Thanks for reading.

Thanks man. I did buy an ona block the linen one {but not the pro one}, but yeah it wasnt the best of smells. My wife says it smells like when a kid was sick at school and they mopped it up with disenfectant and the smell mixed lol

It says ona doesnt hide the smell it nutrelises it {kills it}, why do they have to make the stuff scented then ?
Not sure what the diff between the block and gel is, il look into that.

Had a look at the thread, thanks m8. Thinking of giving one of these frebreeze true air plug in things a whirl but i cant seem to find them in the uk. Wtf !

Even on the u.s. bay there isnt a lot on offer. Are they quite hard to get hold of ?

What fan are you using and what is the size of your filter? The fan can't be too powerfull for the tent but it can be for the filter. How much CFM your fan push?

You're welcome,
I got mine at Walmart in the air purifier section..don't know if that helps ....stuck it in my cab makes a difference...

Good luck to ya!!

No walmart here unfortunatly Mr.Natural. Il keep my eye out and try hunt one down.

@ Xazn2 hi m8. Its an hvk 100a fan that pushes 175m3/hr & the filter is CAN brand and is a 4inch one.
Im in a dr60. Which is 60cmx60cmx120cm.

I done a calculation but not sure if its right. The result i got was i needed to move 12m3/hr for a dr60.

The Fan/Filter are sufficient here. Mostly like an air leak or a positive air pressure in the tent.
Do you have an intake fan? If so, what the flow of this fan?

Nope, CanFan are welded, and they are designed to work with a specified airflow.

Hi guys. Thanks. Arrid How do you mean is it airtight m8? Like all my connections. Im pretty sure it is m8, but im gonna have a better look tomoorw when lights go back on. Goin to try get hold of some decnt clamps too. I think the ones i have arent the best tbh.

I dont have any intake fan xan2 mate. Ive just been using the tents passive intakes. 2 of the 3 tent flaps open. But this was too try help keep the temps down as iv got a 250w in there.

Damn you CANfan !

Il double check my connections guys. Let you know how i get on.

Just thinking. I have a spare carbon filter. Would it be ok to put this onto my extraction hole?{the hole in my bedroom wall where the air is blowing out of ?}
So basically, the air is passing up through the fliter in my tent, up through ducting, then through extraction fan then through more ducting, and finally through the hole in my wall and out through another carbon filter fitted on my exit hole. I would sit this on a shelf.

Ofc tomorrow i may find that it has been a leak sumwhere and the problem will hopefully be resolved, but if not. Would that idea work ?

Thanks for all the help ppl.

Hi Del. I understand its gonna be a bit of a strain on my fan, but im thinking of maybe only putting it on when im out the house at 3 {which is lights off} and back off again later when i get home. Just for a bit of peace of mind.
I will get it sorted more pernamently, but if this is ok to do, id like to do it for now as im trying to spend any spare time i have atm working on a decent drybox {1st harvest coming up}

The first fliter i got with my kit was just the cheapest basic type, np brand name m8.
The second i got is a slightly better one, which is a CAN-filter.
But im sure the first one would still deal with the little leak of smell im geting.

Cheers.

What size can filter do you have? They I have a canfilter 50 and a elicient 12" fan, The filter needs 4200 m³h of air to scrub the air.

Hi there. I just wrote out a huge reply only to find out id been logged back out and lost it all. GRRR
Take 2, here goes...

Hi cloudy harvest m8. Yeah sounds like your on the same boat as me here, except luckily my smell seems to contain itself in my bedroom.

Iv just checked all my connections and duct taped them up, not the prettiest job, but the best i could do with just two hands.
I think/hope it could have been a leak, as the clamp i had on between my fan n filter wasnt mega tight, i could turn it round the ducting just by pushing/pulling it round. Il give it a while and im gonna leave tghe house a bit and come back in with a fresh nose, as you know, thats the best test.

If its not a leak then, from what i can gather, i need a more powerfull fan, or need to get the negative pressure sorted.
Earlier in my grow i had zero humidity and was told this was because my fan was so powerfull,. Id never have thought itr wasnt powefull enough, but there you go.

This isnt a pernament fix, but more of a good back up techniuqe to help deal with the smell. i use tumble dryer sheets around the house where the smell is bad, or close to where people are passing by. Not sure about you mate, but here {uk} i can get them in the supermarket for 90p for for a box of 40. And i put one or two of these at the bottome of my front door, and one in the letter box. When i caom back home to my flat the close smells great. i also put one in my extraction hole in my bedroom where the dirty air is coming out of and the room smells brilliant. But like i say, its just a temporary solution i use for extra safety but a really good tip.

Hope that helps a bit m8, because im still a bit lost in the whole thing too.

@ Creek. Hi mate. The filter i have is a 4inch one. Im not exactly sure as to what number it is. I think it may be 33 or the 50? But it was the smallest/cheapest CAN filter the hydro store had m8, so id say its the 33.
