Perfectly normal. They all smell like that freshly cut. Once properly dried and cured, it gets the smell we all love.

oh ok well i dried a piece under a lamp and it still smells like grass it has 4wks left till finish but im kinda worried its my first grow so yea lol

i have learnedd to wait untill my buds are completly dried and cured till I even try them for the reason that I get worried my buds are gonna suck. Taking little sample are never good and they make me think my bud is shit. plus its just a waste. if you have 4 weeks left that sample must have been terrible. patience grasshopper.

That is what you will end up with unless you cut, dry and cure the right way... Starts with a 2 WEEK FLUSH (SOIL). Flood the soil, wait a few minutes for the salts to break down and then flush them out. Once all the nutrient salts are disolved and flushed it's time for a 5 day dark period or "shock ripening" which will add density, resin and flavor. You will get the best result if this is done w/low temps. (55-65) Low humidity in general increases resin production. When you chop, chop the whole plant and take the branches off, this will slow down drying. Hang them upside down in a dark room. I trim off all the large leaves and give a quick trim as it easier to trim when the plant has been freshly cut. They will hang like that for 7 days... Your room you are drying in should be, ~70F, 50% Humidity~... NO FANS!! Once you can "snap" the buds off of the branch CLEANLY it is time for the jar. Most important part!! This evens out the moisture and adds flavor and potency. THC gets converted to it's psychoactive form. Smoking green "flash" dried pot gives you that 15 min buzzy high and a headache. That is because of chemical changes that need to take place. Put the buds in the jar and make sure you open it and "fluff them up" several times a day to allow the moisture in the jars to escape! Buds that were crunchy will feel wet and soggy all over again. This is the moisture that was still in the inner part of the buds and the stems. Once they feel dry in the jars after several days of opening to burp the jars you are there!! About a week to 2 weeks in the jar and your pot will be Tasty, smell like you want and be ass kicking smoke! Good luck Newbgrower89

so what your saying is when it comes time to flush (which is a wk away for me 5-29) right after i do the flush i put it into darkness for 5 days?!? that will not make it like hermie? (to be honest idk how hermies come about but i heard people putting into darkness for 24hr for the first flowering day to sex it faster and people said they came out with hermies cause of it)

thanks for taking the time to do such a helpful post -P

Early harvested stuff, that is dried quickly as a test is not gonna be enjoyable. It will smell like quickly dried plant clippings, or this grass smell that you have after you cut your yard and pile the stuff. When you cut the plant and dry it normally and slowly it continues to live and create new compounds which act to "finish off" the flowers, also the terpines are allowed to develop and take over the remaining moisture properly creating that nice smell with the left over moisture. Once your stuff gets too dry, you'll probably be lacking the smell of the bud but you will still taste it when smoked because you wont be able to catch moist smelly air off your bag, but they taste similar burned. Although stuff that is too dry becomes harsher, if cured properly dry buds are still okay.

Furthermore, any early harvested pot will not have enough developed terpines/THC to really carry the smells you smelled growing and will end up being crappy anyways. Grow it out till its done and dry it long and slow for the best smoke. Failing to do this will leave you with the crummier weed that even street weed rivals.

Somebody correct me if I was wrong. This was all IME.

As to flushing in darkness, NO! Don't cut your light out from your grow right at flush you will interrupt the metabolism of the plant and it wont fully use up the last of its goodies which gives you the most potent pot. I put mine in flush for 7-10 days and leave the lights on. Perhaps after that I would experiment with dark periods, but I know my clone right now. I know it finishes in 55 days. The problem is when you drop your lights off your buds cant pack on any more weight, no more photosynthesis. If the point is to make more bud, killing the light killed that idea IMMEDIATELY. I laugh at that advice because it does not take into the factor the genetics, of which every plant from seed will be different. I'd be pretty cautious about cutting the lights at all at the end of plant life, and i've never heard of cutting the lights right at flush. The idea is stemming from a strain specific idea (for adding extra white to white widow clones) and it doesn't seem to work for every strain.
