Are ballasts so expensive or am i just getting ripped off!??

well basically i have recently been informed that i need to invest in s new lighting system for my grow room i have decided to goo with a 400w hps with ballast and reflector i was told that this should all add up to about 70 pounds now when i look into it everythings cool apart from the god damn ballasts! WHAT THE HELL DO THEY EVEN DO! 60- 110 for something i dnt even know how it works seems insan. Im a stoner man and a student i just dont have that money and help? im a uk grower any cheap reliable websites i could use or is my research just wrong (prices taken from a local growshop website)

They are the heart of your operation, and yes, they can be spendy.

You have to initially invest a good chunk of money, to get anything back.

Nothing's free thats worthwhile, even pussy.

Stop ya bitchin. You can grow with CFLs and grow with the big boys lights. Both work.

You can drive a garbage truck or a Ferrari. Both will get you to where you wanna go.

Its all about how much you want to spend for the results you want.

No, I don't think you're getting ripped off. A good, electronic ballast is around 80-100 euros. But if you do decide to grow with HPS lamps, as long as you are going to be investing the money anyway, might as well buy something good from the start. So buy an ELECTRONIC ballast. This type of ballast is superior in the sense that it only uses about 5% more electricity than the lamp's wattage. For example if you would buy a 600W HPS and an old-fashion ballast, the set-up could end up consuming about 600W+30% / hour. As opposed to the electronic ballast that only increases the consumption to about 5%. The price difference is small and the investment is definitely worth it.
