How important are fan leaves?

My top pair of fan leaves is stopping 2 or 3 shoots of undergrowth (aka future colas) from developing. Should I just snip these fan leaves?

Also, one of the 2 fan leaves is fairly burnt anyway cause it got too close to the lights so I'm going to trim that either way. But what's more important for growth. Fan leaves or undergrowth?

I just cut all the big fan leaves off my plant, it's about a week away from finishing though. I figure get all them big fan leaves out of the way of the light so the leaves coming off the buds get more light. I could be wrong though.

It's all about experimenting and finding what works best for you.

Don't trim your fan leaves they give your plant the energy to produce food for frowth and more important bud growth. Picture giant solar panels. Find a way to tie them to side out the way maybe.

Fan leaves hold most of the water/nutes in your plants... they are very inportant to the plants growth... sniping the damaged leaves is ok if they are 50% or more damaged.. snipping healthy fan leaves can cause your plant to stress ... there for couse you to loose some yeild... the top is going to give you the better bud / yeild on the plant .. with a high THC potentcy.. hope ths info helps your ... stay high and happy growing.......................

The fan leaves collect the light not the buds
Removing the fan leaves will stunt the plant and hurt your overall yield
Simple photosynthesis guys come on
Do you remove the leaves so that the tomatoes on your tomato plant get light?
It is the same thing here, the buds are your tomatoes
Leave the leaves alone unless you want a smaller yield
Refer to fdd2blk's plants, do you see any missing fan leaves?

:clap:Alright. Thanks guys. I'm not going to cut the leaves off. Instead, I'll just cut off the burnt part. +Rep for all. Oh and if you wanna pass it back, I'll have no problem with it :)

Yeah your wrong, your basically finished now since you removed the leaves as they make the buds grow, the buds do not need light it's the leaves that use light

Let's see your degree in botany!

I don't have one either, so I'll let it slide....

The HUGE leaves that come off the main stalk of the plant, pretty much benefit the stalk.

The smaller leaves that come off of the branches from the stalk, benefit that branch offshoot of the stalk's growth.

And last but not least, the leaves that come off of and out from around immediately around the flowers benefit the flowers closest to it.

It's all about the relationship of the "solar panel" to the closest area that requires the needed energy.

So I'm pretty sure I'm not done, I still have 2-3 weeks left!

Interesting statement, this is something I've wondered about, in fact have posted the question but never got an answer. Do fan leaves benefit only their immediate area or the entire plant? An answer to this question would put to rest forever the question "should I remove fan leaves when flowering?" I am of the opinion that they benefit the entire plant but have no published research to back that belief up. You are of the opinion that the fan leaves benefit their immediate vicinity. I would love to see research to prove either opinion. Anybody got any?
This is a question close to my heart. My growing partner starts tearing off fan leaves at the begining of flowering (it's his property so he has the upper hand). I think we could have had 40lbs last year, wound up with 20.
I would love to throw a research paper on the table and prove him wrong.

do a comparison grow man,..with identical conditions as possible., to give ur partner proof that hes messing with ur yield..
imo ripping off fans is bad yeh, but i have pinched some off, to get more light exposure

So Its cool to cut just the sick parts of a leaf without cutting the whole leaf? My fan leaves on certain plants are turning brown on the edges, almost like a potassium decency.

Actually during vegstate, cutting fan leaves will enhance growth and force the plant into growing more fan leaves. Just make sure you are happy with the looks before you flower her ;)
